Bolt Action at NagoyaHammer

Post by Primarch » Thu Feb 07, 2013 8:39 am

On day two of NagoyaHammer I will be running a Bolt Action participation game. Bolt Action is a platoon level wargame based around WW2. (Game sizes are comparable to 40K, with about 1500 points being more than enough for a good sized game and most infantry costing around 10 points per model).
Written by Alessio Cavatore and Rick Priestley, the game rules are pretty simple and are fairly quick to play.

I had planned to run a game like this last year but wound up playing Warmachine instead. This year I will not be playing in the Warmahordes mini tourney and will be running this instead. If you have ever felt like giving Bolt Action a try, or you just don't fancy playing nothing but 40K for two days, then this game is for you. There will be enough space for 4 players and the game will run twice on the day if there is enough interest. I will see if I can rustle up some loot for those people who do decide to join.

The game will be between opposing Russian and German forces as they fight for control of a bridge somewhere in Eastern Europe. There will be tanks, guns, infantry and more besides.

Interested parties should feel free to sign up below.

I suppose I might be persuaded to give it a try. It's just a pity the figures are so big :D

Sounds fun. Can't promise anything due to fated bad luck in recent months. If I make it I'll try out Bolt Action. :)
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

Some background for those with an interest in such things.

By 1944, the Eastern Front had undergone some dramatic shifts. The early German invasion had been halted and the forces of the Reich pushed back from the heart of Russia. The Red Army was fully mobilised with millions of troops being pushed to the front supported by massive formations of tanks, artillery and aircraft. Meanwhile, the Germans were suffering from intense air raids from the Western Allies that were limiting production of vehicles and sapping the power from the Luftwaffe. In the Spring of 1944, the Russians launched Operation Bagration, a massive assault intended to overwhelm and crush German Army Group Centre. Due to various deception tactics and a narrow minded central command, the German army was caught flatfooted by the assault. Within a couple of days the Russians had punched massive holes through the German defensive lines and entire divisions had been routed or captured. German high command and Hitler inparticular had ordered that no forces were to retreat or give ground without express permission from Hitler himself. This led to German forces being unable to respond to the attack in any practical manner and thousands of troops were surrounded and overrun. By the time orders to withdraw came through it was already to late for a large number of soldiers.

This battle at NagoyaHammer represents one of the German units attempting to break out from the Russian encirclement. With no support and the vast Red Army closing in they must take a vital bridge to allow the bulk of their trapped force and wounded comrades to escape back to the safety of German lines. Meanwhile, the Russians need to hold the bridge and prevent the breakout so the treacherous invaders of Mother Russia can suffer the punishment they deserve.

So, with 5 players onboard so far it looks like the game will run twice on the day. Once from 9:30 until about 1pm and again from 2 until around 4:30ish.
For those already signed up do you prefer to play in the morning or afternoon, or are you ok with either? Likewise, do you want to play the Germans (attacking), the Russians (defending), or do you have no particular preference?
In the case of odd numbers I will play to balance things out, otherwise I will be there as a GM.
