Little Wars by HG Wells. It's over a century since he made these rules for wargaming in the garden. The rules are still available and played by some enthusiasts today. http://www.gutenberg.org/files/3691/3691-h/3691-h.htm
Last post today, promise.

With her husband running around in the lawn with toy soldier, Mrs. Wells must have been pretty embarrassed or very tolerant or both. :D

It is also interesting the rules don't involve the use of dice which is so standard these days. Not even cards.

The original version had cannons that would actually fire small projectiles. Once people got more involved in the actual painting they didn't like seeing their new paint jobs getting scraped and scratched.

The great man had this to say;

Brilliant. What a great word, blundering.
