I can bring enough terrain and mat for a 4x4 game, so maybe better not to throw too much stuff down on the board.

The basic rulebook reads 750pt per player. How about trying it just like said in the page?
Based on the army lists (which give mainstay units higher points than 40K lists), armies for this game would be something like 500 pt 40K armies. Seems to me not too much even for the first set of games.

Do you or Underdweller have a gaming mat? I have a 4x4 cloth, but 6x4 might be better for three players.

I can bring all the terrain for the game, but if one of you two has a bigger mat that would be very helpful.
