Hi all,

I'm organizing a gaming event: KaijuCon!

Details on the website and below. This is a bi-lingual mini-convention. We are focusing a more on TRPGs, as my company (http://sonsofthesingularity.com) publishes books and Chaosium (a TRPG publisher of the Call of Cthulhu TRPG series) will be here for a book signing and promotion event. However, there are plenty of tables and it's BYOBG.

I'm planning to have some tables in the main room for wargames, as can be seen on the image below. Tables are free to reserve; Convention general admission tickets are 2000¥ / person.

I think this can be a great event to bring together gamers in the Nagoya area and even attract new people into the hobby. If anyone here is interested in organizing a session (or two or three) of wargaming at this mini-convention, please contact me (Jesse) at kaiju. convention @ gmail .com. I'm also contactable at my company email at sons.of.the.singularity @ gmail . com

That's awesome! It'd be good to have some wargaming presence there, might be a good opportunity for demo games.

Which makes me think - Jesse, what are your thoughts on bilinguality (not a word but you get what I mean ) of any demos we do? How bilingual has attendance been in the past?

(We could probably get a couple few people together to show off Warhammer Underworlds - it's boardgame-adjacent to the extent that it's probably actually better classed as one, easy to demo, and doesn't take much table space.)

I don’t RPG and I won’t be in country by July, but I want to salute you, Jesse! Well done, sir!

Thank you! This is but a start of a long adventure.

This is the first time I'm running this. There were TRPG gaming groups here in the past; they sort of imploded and then died during Covid.

We are trying to separate Japanese and English games, and nurture key foreign GMs (they are running Call of Cthulhu so are called "Keepers" but I think you understand) that can run a game in Japanese.

I don't know how easy or difficult it would be for wargames though. If a boardgame is bilingual friendly with emergency human and machine translation, that would be awesome.

Thank you! I hope people here who are interested can get that demo (or other type of session) together; I'll would put that on the schedule.

Hmm, let me think then. If I were to demo something it would probably be Warhammer Underworlds, but it's pretty text-heavy and while I can play in Japanese I only have English-language cards and such. When do you want to get things locked in, in terms of who's coming and what they're doing?

I would love for you to do this and I can reserve a table-slot for you just for this if you like. If you want to do this in Japanese, you can write that the game is in Japanese BUT participants must have some level of English reading ability.

I am hoping that a group of you would run a full-on 40K session, in the entrance tables. People coming in will see it in all it's glory; say the word and I'll put this on the schedule.

I hope to publish a list of scheduled games in early June. This will help drive ticket sales. This can be modified until the last minute though.

Maybe I'm overthinking this but I think anyone who can do a game in Japanese is doing us a big favor. I think (and this maybe just my prejudices and stereotypes) that foreigners are more able to just go and find something / bring something to do, but there is more likely to be some number of Japanese people who would find this difficult.

We could definitely play a 40K game for everyone to see. Demoing it is a bit more challenging, though Age of Sigmar has a more accessible introductory mode.

Note though there is a lively scene in Japanese for GW games and tbh I think the Gifuhammer crew plays a lot more 40K than I do. Kill Team and Blood Bowl are pretty popular and take up a lot less table space too.
