Using Fantasy for 40k and Modding in General

Post by Domikaze » Mon Aug 29, 2011 1:55 am

Hey, Everyone.

So, I play 40k but lovvvvvve the Fantasy models for the Orks perhaps more than any other GW army. I have painted just about all of my Assualt on Black Reach Boyz and now I am starting to move onto my Nobz and other bigger models. I am going for more or less of a Voodoo theme for my army - with the HQs and stronger units having a very colorful, voodoo-ish look.

The thing is, a lot of the Fantasy Ork models already have units that already look like this and I was thinking I should just use a few of them. I am sorry that I can't link these units at the moment (firewall at work), but I was thinking of taking one of these Voodoo looking HQs and converting him into a Weirdboy or something. But, I know the bases are different in Fantasy and that also makes me wonder about the size. So, do you guys think it would be possible for me to do this?

I also want to do some general additions (like wooden voodoo masks) that I want to make myself, but I have no idea what kind of materials I should use for something like that. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

- Dom

Regarding size, the Fantasy and 40K models are all the same. Fantasy uses square bases whilst 40k uses round bases, but that is the only significant difference. Parts and pieces should be roughly the same size and shape.

As for Voodoo masks, I know that the Ork biker kit comes with some front panels that might do the job.

the Shields in the BlackOrcs box sets make great voodoo masks... you get like 2 shields in the box but if you ask around I am sure some one has some for you...

I smell me a kitbasher! :D

Absolutely - using fantasy orcs to represent 40k orks is totally OK. In fact, you could theme the whole shebang as vooodoo Snakebite clan orks. That'd be aces :D

As for bases, 40k models are on round bases because they dont rank up. Personally I think they look better on roundies, and since it is very cheap and easy to just buy a whole bunch of round slottabases, I dont see why you shouldnt just buy a bunch of savage orcs and a bunch of round bases and join em up.

One thing I would ask is : Does anyone (looking at you here, Badruck) have any spare shootas or similar that he could stick onto his savage orky types? They're going to need some firepower to bring em into the 41st millenium, and it seems a bit poopy to have to buy a whole ork box set just for the shootas. (although you could maybe mix and match a box of fantasy savage orcs and a box of 40k Ork Boyz to make some hybridy types with a savage yet 40k feel? I dunno the models well enough to say for sure, though.)

As for the wierdboy/shaman? heck, you wouldnt even need to convert him. He'd be perfect as-is.

Might not be what you are after, but they are a good source of inspiration.

I can also root around for extra shootas for you.

Here is a very cool voodoo looking ork boss...http://gamezoneminiatures.de/orks-und-g ... axten.html I may have a shoota or too in my bits box but I have gotten rid of a lot of my bitz I will have a look and let you know...a good way to fill out your ork army is to buy two boxes of boyz from the 40k range and 2 boxes of boys from the FB range 20 round bases from one of the many resin base companies kit bash the hell out of them and presto you have a very unique army made from some of the best plastic kits GW has to offer. You will have enough boyz to run almost every variation of army out of the standard Ork Codex...in a box of 40k boyz you get shootaz and slugasz in the FB orc boys box you get choppaz galore and spears spears would look great on your sluga boyz especialy if you are going with a Voodoo theme the FB stuff also comes with banners and totem looking skulls
