Though I appreciate that time wise having two separate contests might be difficult, but you could do one on each day.
Tow separate contest with two separate entries or just same conter but just two judging bracket ?

I don't see a difference between pro standard and hobbyist standard, unless by hobbyist standard you mean "sacrifice quality for speed", in which case the best thing to do would be to have a speed-painting competition. It's all just a question of applying paint to a mini. My highest scoring mini so far took me 3 weeks, working in the evenings, mostly. My lowest scoring mini took me about 4 months. Anybody can knock out a well presented mini with shades, highlights, decent base and so on and so forth in about a week or two. I'm very much against the idea of splitting the painting compo. If you feel that someone is so much better than the rest of the entrants, then all that means is the rest of the entrants can do better next time. There's no deep secret to being a good painter. All you have to do is read up on techniques, and practice them. That's it. Anybody can do it.

*edit* I can maybe try and make it along to the Tsu games day in June for a bit of a painty teaching session, if folks are interested.

Well, in that case could we have more winning categories, as was the overall theme of this year, to make it more exciting, such as best pose or composition, most true to the race, and of course most beautifully painted :) :?: Though with so many winners, the prizes would have to be a wee bit smaller  ...hmm...on second thoughts ;)

Not going to comment...on this years painting contests...

I am not sure I will enter in any more painting contests I would not be against being a judge.

I would like see the best army category come back. It didn't take much time to judge. The army painting was great that year. This year it was not bad but it could have been better.

A painting contest is simple. The best looking models win. In a contest though beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The soloution would be not two contests but a panel of judges. For example MIJ as the technique and skills critic, then an art lover who knows stuff all about technique but knows a good mini when they see it and then a monkey with a banjo. ;)

@Koji, I'm assuming from your concern you didn't get any luck in the comp this time. Don't despair I've seen your models and they are very good and as I said beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So many good painters in the area though it must have been hard to pick a winner. Don't go changing your style, everyone paints differently. When I paint I like to switch off, not think about technique or painting by numbers and do my best for that artist autonomy. It's hit and miss but sometimes I make a lucky mistake and get a good looking mini. There is no 'right' way to paint so don't be disheartened by comps that don't come through. Sorry if this sounds patronizing on email, it's meant sincerely. :)

For the record I reckon I could win a speed painting comp hands down if NH held one. :ugeek:
Last winter I managed a Prussian army in 6 weeks and a FOW one in 2 nights. What's that you say? :ugeek: No Army Painter allowed? Oh sloblock! :( :)

ashmie has pondered this and passed more gumpf for the good folks of NH.

Mate no one paints as fast as I do but I am happy to put my paint brush where my mouth is. If there ever is a speed painting contest. I am sure I could win it. :D :D :D
