things for pinning and magnetizing
Re: things for pinning and magnetizing
Hello, was searching around and came upon this thread.
Just wanted to ask if you guys know any place close were you can get small magnets not over the net, I figure you can get some at Toukyuu Hands?

Prim's your man for that question. I must confess, I got mine over the net. Theyre not cheap, btw. Small magnets, I mean, so be warned...

Quick Question (or two). Why don't you want to use the net? Do you need the magnets quickly? Don't want to use a credit card etc? IIRC Tokyu Hands does have some magnets but not any small enough for weapon swaps etc.
I use and recommend this Japanese site that has all sorts of magnets.

I have used them a few times. All of my orders arrived within one or two days. You needn't use a credit card either. You can pay by bank transfer or even pay COD (for a small fee). The site is all in Japanese but is pretty easy to navigate.
Hope that helps.

I've never seen any at Tokyu Hands but then again, I've never really looked. I did find some bigger magnets made from the same stuff at The Daiso one time, but they were to big to be of any real use. (Think 1 yen coin size).
Mail order is probably your best bet.

Ringtail has them for under half the price of that magfine.jp site. A quick check of their prices was 20yen each vs 49yen for 4mm ones.

Love those magnets - they're cool.

Reason is because I don't have a credit card and usually they don't let you do COD.Mike the Pike wrote:Quick Question (or two). Why don't you want to use the net? Do you need the magnets quickly? But then if they let you do COD my secondary reason is that I don't want my hobby stuff to get in my wife's face all the time. It is amazing that she is accepting me doing it when she is not around AND let's me store my models in our shared space. In other words I am trying to be as smooth as possible. But that magnet site sounds good if they let you do COD.
I will check it out if there are no other optios close by. Thanks.

That is a nice site, thanks for introducing it. They seemed to be based in Japan?

Re: things for pinning and magnetizing
Dave, gotta love your approach to massively over-engineering things.
Well, apart from that drillbit wrapped in elastoplasts - I find a black & Decker power drill works a lot better.
For the record, I use 2mm, 3mm and 5mm diameter magnets. One pair of 3mm magnets will hold the barrel of a Leman Russ tank on, the 2mms are for small fiddly things (like the head on one of the MERCS minis) and 5mms for big beefy bits. The landing gear on my Forge World Thunderbolt fighter, for example, are magnetized with 5mm magnets. That's enough to keep them attached and allow the plane to stand on its skids. They're also enough to securely hold a metal Dreadnought arm without drooping, which is why I reckon your "magnet and 2 pins" approach to that resin dread is overkill.
According to my dad, anyway, and he knows everything.
Admittedly, I don't always listen to him, and I've gone through my share of drillbits, too. Mostly the really fiddly 0.5mm ones, though.

Don't do this. It's bad. You only need enough pressure to get the bit to bite initially. After that, it'll pull itself in. If you have to push, the bit is blunt, and you need a new one.me_in_japan wrote:They can and will snap, and if youre putting pressure on it at the time (i.e. in the middle of drilling, which you will be...)

Can you get them delivered to your work address? That seems to be the favoured method of henpecked gamers in the UK.Seb wrote:But then if they let you do COD my secondary reason is that I don't want my hobby stuff to get in my wife's face all the time.
