@Jus- Nice work. The old WFB Empire models and older 40k Inquisition minis seem like a good starting point fashion-wise. Maybe Malifaux, Warmahordes and Dark Age may have useful minis too?

Today I had a look at the new Daemons of the Ruinstorm armylist from Forge World.
Now, admittedly it's for 7th Edition/30K, so won't be of much interest to most people, but FW have taken quite an interesting approach to the list.
With the exception of Ka'Bandha, the named Bloodthirster that had a bit of a scrap with Sanguinius, the list doesn't have any set models that you have to use. There are no Bloodletters, no Seekers, no Plague Bearers. Instead each unit has a generic unit type Daemon Brutes, Daemon Cavalry, Daemon Swarm etc. These give you the basic template and you can then add abilities from a menu as you see fit. Each chaos god has a unique ability which you can only choose if you have selected that god as your army's patron. The idea is that this is the Imperium's first real run in with Daemons on a massive scale, so there has been no codification of them and their abilities. Obviously official GW minis are recommended, but so long as you base models appropriately, you can use whatever you like.
There are several other unique points to the list. As I mentioned above, you have to choose a patron for your army. They aren't specifically called out by name, but the 6 options are: Undivided; Khorne; Tzeentch; Slaanesh; Nurgle and... a 5th Chaos God! (One for the Nostalgia fans out there).
With the exception of possessed mortals, all of the army starts off the table and enters play by warp rifts from reserve. Some models can choose to arrive on turn 1 and some have to roll to enter. At the beginning of the game every model gets bonuses to Strength and Toughness, but as the game progresses they lose those bonuses and eventually get penalties as reality starts to re-exert itself over the power of the warp.
All in all, it looks like a fun option for a game no-one plays or has much interest in. :D

@ Jus: Awesome, awesome stuff. The administrum figure is picture perfect grim dark. Great works with the scrolls of paper. And nice work with trenchcoats. I especially like the folds in the last figure you did. Keep working on it till you can do justice to Eisenhorn-esque one.

But I have to mention there’s like a history of codpieces on display. The last guy has one worn about the neck in good 18th century fashion. And, the 16th century dude either plume is well wearing one where you might expect it to be.

@ Prim: 30k? Well, I did diliberately request my Fallen to be built with 30k figures, 30k colors and theme. I’m just waiting for Dark Angels rules (and an excuse to play).

Oh, and as for hobby stuff of my own: I managed to steal away an hour to paint a bit more of my IG. Hopefully, I get another hour bed tonight.

The Dark Angels have had some get-you-by rules for well over a year now. HH Book 6 - Retribution has rules for the 1st Legion in it, and most units will just use the generic legion list anyway.
That said, the rules so far are just the Legion traits and special formations. Specialist units, named characters and (of course) The Lion will (should?) all be included in Book 9, and FW will be happy to sell you some very expensive minis to go along with those rules. The 9th book is probably due next year given FW's recent performance with the Heresy. It should also cover Night Lords and Dark Mechanicum according to rumours and scuttlebutt.
The Fallen won't be included until the very end of the series I guess. Luthor and his cohort spent the Heresy on Caliban and only showed their colours when the rest of the legion came home.

@ Prim: Thanks for the HH update. I haven’t given it much thought to be honest, but HH seems like a good thematic game of 40k. You know that I’m a bit of a sucker for FW models, but it is very unlikely I’ll ever get into 30k too much. The price is probitive. There aren’t that many players. And, honestly, 7th Ed rules were probably 2nd worse edition. (6th May have been the clunkiest IMO.)

But a small(-erish) games of HH would be appealing. Generic rules for legions would be fine, but a few flavorful Legion rules spice things up.

Yep, FW is mega-expensive, especially since they hiked the prices to make things more convenient for players outside the UK.
There are some alternatives for infantry equipment if you use third party makers, but vehicles will tend to be a huge expense.
I totally agree about 7th ed being a massive FUBAR of an edition, only being surpassed by it's not-aborted-soon-enough predecessor of 6th. Rules-wise I still find 5th to be the best, (and yes, I am including 8th in that statement), though it does have it's flaws, wound allocation being easily abused and the ridiculous levels of codex-creep that plagued every release being the most noteworthy.
I mainly keep up with the HH releases as I prefer FW's style of writing to GW's. The Imperial Armour and Horus Heresy books are more like military history books than game books. The proof-reading is often a little poor, but they come across as more believable.

I'm still stalled out hard on painting those space marines, but finding it hard to find time to prime goblins either for some reason. Just a bit of a rut, exacerbated by the usual start-of-the-semester busy-ness.

On the other hand, I dipped my first toe into Black Library and have stormed through the first two books of the Eisenhorn trilogy in like a day and a half after listening to Dan Abnett's rather good interview on the latest VoxCast (although you do have to feel a bit sorry for Wade Pryce, the generally rather good host of the relaunched GW podcasts - once Abnett gets going Pryce barely gets a word in for the next 90 minutes).
Feel free to call me Dave!

@ Primarch: Your comment about FW prices is very valid. Of course they’ve always been kind of ostentatious conspicuous consumption of a sorts for the hobby. But, I’ve been very happy with the Blood Slaughterer, the Sicaran and the traitor guard models that I purchased. It’s a pretty penny, but if you really want a capstone... or an exotic unit... or an interesting project, they are nice models. At least that’s my thinking about FW.

And as for editions, I’m between 3rd or 5th Ed. 3rd was really simple. It might all be just nostalgia on my part, but I recall you could own 20-30 figures and a vehicle and that would be an army. And the codexes were nice 30 some page supplements that didn’t have long reams of rules in them. (2 pages of war gear? Yes please) oh, and I think 1st edition of the Apocalypse rules have never been surpassed in my opinion.

5th however was the edition I had the peak of my 40k experiences. I’m sure everyone has their pet peeve in this edition about the variation in Codex writing styles and take their snipes at one writer or another. But all in all, it was a pretty darn good time for 40k.

Uh yea, hobby progress. I finished Ravenor on audiobook last night. Does that count?

Have not got much painting in lately, but have just about finished my German Heavy Infantry platoon for Konflikt 47. Just waiting on my Heavy Infantry officer team to finish it off. It's a pretty rushed paintjob, but does what it needs to.
