I was always good at staying within the lines in coloring books

Since the contrast paints are so translucent you really do have to practice good brush control, yeah, unless you're using that translucency for blending and such (which I'm doing more and more as I get used to the paints). I've said it before, but the GW ad copy of "slap on one thick coat" really does the line a disservice.

(That said, I really have no idea how I'm going to use contrasts to do the gribbly weathered armor on the nurgle warband, but by gum I'm going to try.)

I got some work done on the Imperial flyers for AI. I tried basecoating in 3 different shades which looked alright if a bit subtle then I hit the entire thing with a wash. After which I did some dry brushing in the 2 lighter colours originally when base coating. Also masking tape is super fun on these planes, although either the airbrush primer not being strong enough or me sticking on the masking tape a bit too hard resulting in the masking tape tearing off a patch of primer. Luckily it was on the underside and I was able to brush on some primer to cover it up.
Next up, metallics and other details.

P.S. My first attempt was thin layers of contrast and oh boy did it not like the flat panels. I ended up base coating over that and going with a more traditional approach of base, wash, dry brush instead.

aha, well - on that one I can actually comment, as most of my plaguebearers, nurglings and poxies were done using just such a technique (well, I used watered down inks, but whatevs). Basically, shade using colour? Nurgle stuff can actually be very colourful, and I reckon it works pretty well that way. Purple is your friend :D

And the Wurmspat*!

Image

The only thing I might do different in retrospect is make Gulgoch (the axe guy on the right) have a skin tone that's a bit more distinct from the color I used for leather, but lessons learned and all that! (I was shooting for jaundiced, but yellow plus skin tone equals leather, apparently.) Next is the ogor, then I'll either have to slow down or buy more minis or something.

*I love the lore on these guys. They're called the wurmspat because they rode to Beastgrave inside the gut of a giant worm, who barfed them out when they arrived at their destination.

Nice looking gribblies.
The name makes sense now. I guess the Uber Hailers doesn't have quite the same menacing ring to it.

And Frogsworn's Clamslappers... Er, Hrothgorn's Mantrappers, all done:

(I'm not counting the trap-on-a-base as a miniature painted this year - I have some standards.) I love the gnoblars, lots of character. The ogre himself is all in leather so came out a bit... brown but it can't be helped, really. I suppose I'll do the Grymwatch next, although (like MiJ mentioned last time we played) I'm not eager to play them just because they're so popular. :D

The dog-beast looks really good with contrast and the blue gobbos look like a bunch of angry smurfs. They also remind me that I have 48 Skinks that I need to paint with Contrast...

Anyway, in terms of things that I have actually been painting I sort of finished up the AI box set models. Since I painted the Imperial aircraft after the Orks they look a lot better, which makes me feel like I need to go back and dry brush and highlight the Orks. That shouldn't take too long but I really need to move on as soon as I'm done with that. Other than that all of the models were great fun to paint and a nice change of pace from the usual scale and model type.

Good lord above, Dave - you're fair churning out those WU minis. In the time it's taken you to do the wurmspat and Hrothgorn, I've barely managed...a gnoblar  Yeesh. You make it look easy, mate. Hats off to you *hat tip*

Also, those are lovely wee fliers, Karantu. I do like a bit o whooshdakkadakka, and those fighters have it in spades. Very effective colour schemes, on great models. Looking good 8-)

@Karantu, those are some nice tiny plens. Love how the cockpits on the Imperials turned out! My greenskins looking smurfy is the original whole joke, yes. :D When I started collecting my night goblins back in the day I decided their pointy hats looked pretty smurfy, so blue skin and white robes it was. The rest, unfortunately, is history.

@mij, thanks! I’m really getting spoiled - looking at my warlord on the table and all the time and acrylics I’ll need to paint it is looking like a drag, heh. So priming up the Grymwatch and the orc brutes I got for WarCry is the order of the day instead. Then I may try and see how contrast NMM works with the Iron Golem.
