aaaaaw, shucks

as for yon chappy - I havent seen his work before, but aye, he seems pretty good. My only critique would be that he could do with a bit more interest in his models. Variation in colour, that kind of thing. He could also use a wee bit of spot interest - freehands, nmm, etc.

as for me, I reckon these guys are the business (in their own fields)

mood, and ability to make any model look dark and scary - SkelletetS (He's also very active on the forum, helpful, and generally seems to be a nice chap.)

bases: Jarhead

mood - picster

freehand - yellowOne

use of colour - Ana

originality and general ability to make people see this hobby as Art - Jeremie Bonamant Teboul

for making Frutti di Mare - Muhani

but if I had to choose one artist as "the best", I'd have to go for Rusto

*edit* btw, those of us with paid subscriptions for CMoN get to have our own "favourites" gallery. Lookylooky...

Spev is my favourite painter because the colours are vivid and stand out from one another. You can see exactly what the models are and the minis he paints are usually old skool or easy on the eye. The varnish shade he uses is very good as a finish, whatever it is. I suspect it's top secret like the Big Mac source.
After Spev my favourite painters on this forum are MIJ (obviously) and Ten. Precise, detailed and relentless.
After that I like Jon Blanche, Munch, Brugel, Van Gogh, Brian Froud, Manet and Ted Nasmith. Lardy da. :)
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

The nod is appreciated by Spevna, yes it is.

You actually like John blanche's stuff? I mean, more than other GW painters?

If we're talking GW art, then mark gibbons is vg. Also whoever did the art for the 4th ed rulebook individual faction background pics was very good.

If we're talking classical Aht then I'd have to go for Carravagio. I'm a sucker for chiaroscuro, and he was rather good at it. Rembrandt had his moments, and Turner was da man when it came to landscapes. I'm hardly redefining the art world with any of these opinions, but that's who I like :)

Yeah surprising I know but if you were to ask me about WH art that is the first thing that comes to mind. It's very memorable. I like the chaotic abstractness of it. He did a lot of good black and white ink for early Fighting Fantasy and whfrp campaigns. Not realistic and a little childlike but I think it looks good.
He only uses 3 paints on models is that right? I like that.

I didn't use to like it, but it's grown on me. Mark Gibbons, Des Hanley and the like are all good, but there's something about John's work that sort of sums up 40K - It's a bit mad, doesn't stay in the lines and sometimes you can't quite tell what it is. :) Same goes for his miniatures.

I also really liked Paul Dainton's work for Warhammer. His stuff in Warhammer armies: High Elves really does a good job of making them look alien.

As for actual art, on canvas and things, it's not something I've really given a lot of thought. I do prefer representational art rather than more abstract stuff, though.
