Viking themed Fantasy Chaos Warriors

Post by Seb » Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:09 am

Hey guys I need your opinions on this one.

While playing 40k I am also interested in trying out fantasy, just a small army and I have already got some models to start off with and I would like to create a kind of Viking themed army based on Chaos Warriors. The thing is, I want to use the model I use in 40k as HQ as my Lord in fantasy as well. The reason why?
Because I spent alot of money and effort on it and what viking wouldn't wanna ride to battle on a huge wolf if they could?

Here is where I want your opinions;
the model in question is a conversion based on Canis Wolfborn from the Space Wolves range, and I would like to field this model as a Chaos Lord after some converions.

Image

If I am doing this I thought that I would probably have to:

* Take off backpack and greenstuff his fur cloak where the backpack was or make a conversion to it to make it look less futuristic.
* File down thunderhammer marks and its power cables connected to the armour to make it look like a more normal warhammer.
* Same with Storm Shield, file off its marks, remove cables etc.
* Take off grenades.
* Redo the mask with some filing and green stuff to make it look less futuristic.
* Take off futuristic parts from thunderwolf and make it look more like a generic big wolf mount.

Firstly before doing this conversion though I would like your opinions on this because the fact that the armour in the end is going to look power armourish even though I take off all futuristic parts like cables etc. can't be helped. SO I want you guys to vote YES/NO if you think that this model AFTER this kind of conversion would be acceptable to field in both 40k and fantasy or is that just asking for trouble.

Secondly I know it is a bad picture but after looking at it is there anything else I can do to make it useable in both fantasy and 40k that I didn't write in the list above? Opinionwise, gimme all you got.

If YES prevails then I will go ahead and make the conversion, on the other hand if you guys say NO then I will probably buy another HQ for the fantasy army which in the end might influence my 40k army choice as well.
But in the end I just want your honest opinions.

Thanks!

Hey seb,

firstly, warriors of chaos are super badass, and I think you are going to have lots of fun playing them, if you start them.

As for making a model fit for both fantasy and the 40k - I think it can be done. But will a guy in power armour fit in with the rest of your fantasy army? I think if you paint him up with your chaos warrior theme, stick on a few skulls and what not. Most of the fantasy chaos characters actually look alot like the chaos marine cousin any way so I think it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Seb, you strike me as a guy who pays attention to detail. (like me). I'm very particular with the way my army looks, and go the extra mile and pay the extra yen to make my models look exactly the way I want them to. If you choose to work on the space marine and convert him up with all sorts of cuts and pastes, you will most certainly end up with a very satisfactory chaos lord on a giant wolf.

As you go to assemble the rest of your war host and look at all the great fantasy sprues and plethora of great chaos bits and weapons. You "might" think to yourself..."hmm, my chaos lord looks really cool as he is now.. but wouldn't he look that much cooler with, that the shield with the dragon skull, instead of the storm shield the bone plate chest piece torso, instead of the space marine one, or the chaos knight leg greaves instead of those chunky power armour snow cones.

I think it might be easier and less of a hassle if you keep and convert up the wolf and build a new chaos lord from fantasy range sprues and make them interchangable with magents for whatever game you are playing. But thats just me.

Oh heres another suggestion, - take a look at Archaon or the chaos lord models, and see if you think you can make your guy look anything like that - they kind of look like they are in power armour, a little, then the marine should be fine

...I just so happen to have an unopened box of chaos knights that I don't need. You can have it for cheap if you want to start your new army off.

A "Fantasy" miniature looks less out of place in 40K than the other way around, IMO. I would concentrate on making it look good for Fantasy, then rig up a saddle-holster with a bolter or something you can bluetac/magnet on when you want to use it for 40K. Space Marine backpacks would be easy to make so they come on and off.
I use old Fantasy Battle Dwarf Troll Slayers for some of my Necromunda gang. I just blue tack a holstered pistol on thier belt and voila! instant ganger.

I think that this route is probably the best to be honest. Yes, you can cut huge chunks out of your Space Wolf commander to make it fit with Fantasy, but in doing so you'll make it look less Sci-Fi. Just switch the riders around between games. Its not like you wont have to buy a lot of plastic Chaos Warriors anyway.

The only problem with this is that the wolf and the commander is in one whole metal piece, so changing riders for this model is not an option. In that case I would have to saw off and dremel off the original rider and custom build 2 riders, plus it would probably damage the wolf model a lot too.

I already started the conversion on the model and it is going unexpectedly well. I have solved the backpack and the head issues, they now look good IMO for both fantasy and 40k. The model is now rocking a cool hood plus I made additional changes to the head.

What do you think?

I will eventually change the shield when I get my hands on some appropriate warhammer ones..

It looks a little bit strange now with all the putty on, especially the face mask but it will look uniform after it gets a basecoat.

The weapon was fun doing, I guess some people will like it some will not, I wanted it to look wrapped up.. looking kinda mysterious 8-)
I thought it fit with the hidden face look, but in the end doesn't look so viking, kinda more ninjaish.

Looking good. I think the hammer would look better if it had an axe blade rather than a hammer head on it, but other than that it looks ok.

Yes, I agree with you. It would look more natural with an axe blade instead but to me that would lose a little bit of its originality, I can't remember that I have ever seen a warhammer/lance/spear thing variant before.
But the original thought to why I made it this way was because in fantasy I want to use the weapon as a blade, in 40k I can now use it both as a frost weapon or a thunder hammer if I wish without having to magnetize and switch arms.
