Hey guys, I saw a thread on dakka(kouzuki there) and decided to sign up here, as this is the "main" website.

I currently play in Tokyo, and as this is currently the only big tournament I've heard about in 4+ months back in JP, I kinda want to attend. Before I confirm though, there are a few questions I want to ask.

I was wondering, in the past, how many people have you usually gotten from Tokyo area?
How do they get there?
How about accommodation?

I'm also wondering if there is a Japanese thread/guide/whatever that I can link Japanese players to? I'm interested in getting others to come along as well, however, most of the gamers I play with not too literate in English.

Last year we had one player from Tokyo come down, but we would really really like to get more. Most of the news about our events are spread by word of mouth and across English speaking forums, so it is hard to reach new people. Last year, we also got players from Hiroshima and Hokkaido as well. I am not sure how the Tokyo player made the trip, but there are several ways to get to Nagoya. First and fastest is obviously the Shinkansen, but if you dont want to spend that much there is always an overnight bus. If you have a car you will need to park it at the hotel since the venue has no parking available.

I am creating new threads in English AND Japanese to show where the event is and what you will need. My Japanese is terrible though, so there will probably be some mistakes in it. Whilst most of our board members are native english speakers, most of them speak Japanese better than me, so please encourage your friends to post in Japanese and someone will give them a response.

I have just sent out an e-mail regarding this tournament to a few of my Tokyo-based 40k buddies, and have in turn requested that they share the info regarding the event with their bigger 40k circles.

One thing I wish be clarified is this:

Is the game going to be played in inches? or CM?

I will go ahead and assume CM, as thats how its played in JP... however, i just want to be 100% sure. If its going to be inches, well... it will be kind of hard asking Japanese players to come. (Most don't even own an inch-based tape measure.)

In Nagoya we nearly always play in inches. For the event people can play in inches or cm, but should discuss it with their opponent first. If there is a conflict, inches take priority since that is the standard measurement system for the game and it worked fine last year.
I have some spare tape measures with inches on if anyone needs to borrow them, so players without inch measures can still come along and play.

Even Japanese people play in inches? (Think GW Hobby Store.)

The game is marketed here in CM, and I know that in Tokyo we usually play with CM.

If you want to play with inches, I suggest making it clear on both information posts regarding the tournament. I also suggest no on the "discuss with your opponent before hand" thing, as although the game system is basically the same, the distance difference between CM and Inches really allows for different tricks to be pulled off.

Additionally, distance approximating, etc. will be about 1/5 off.

When the Japanese players play each other they use cm I believe. When they play against non-Japanese they are quite happy using inches. There aren't any GW stores outside the Tokyo area so players in Nagoya and elsewhere aren't usually so bothered about it.
I didnt mean that we would use both systems at the same time. Basically every game will be played in cm OR inches. Players would decide before each game which system they preferred to use.
e.g. Non-Japanese vs Non-Japanese would usually be inches.
Japanese vs Japanese would usually be cm
Japanese vs Non-Japanese could be played in inches or cm, they players should decide which method they prefer. If they cannot agree then Inches take priority.

I think that Reikou has a good point about the availibilty of tape measures with inches on them. If the Tokyo folks are used to using cm, then its a big shift for them to move to inches (I have huge troubles moving from inches to cm, but Im willing to try again) He's also right when he says that there are big differences between play with cm and with inches. (I find cm to be a bit inconvenient, particularly with eldar tanks. If you can deploy 4cm outside a tank's access points, then due to the design of the howling banshee/wave serpent models you cant physically fit a squad of 10 banshees within the legal deployment area. This suggests to me that the game would run more smoothly if we used inches, as thats what it was designed for.)

@reikou: If we could supply inch tape measures for all tables during the games, would that be OK for the Tokyo gamers? Or would the change in measurement from cm to inches throw people off their game too much do you think?

I have 6 spare tapes as well as one for myself. If you could pick up a couple of cheap ones before you head back over, I'll pay you back for them next time I see you.

There are some big differences between inches and cm. Deepstrike gets easier since you dont scatter as far and flamers/blast templates become more dangerous since your models are closer together. Having played at events in Kyushu and Osaka as well as Nagoya, no-one I have met has had a problem playing in inches. I believe that the GW stores do sell tape measures with inches on them as well.

By offering both systems, it means that players can choose which one is best for them or even try the new style to see what they think. It is possible to play half of your games in cm and half in inches or all in one style. I'm not trying to exclude anyone here, just making sure that there are no misunderstandings on the day. So far this hasnt been an issue, but we didnt have many people from Tokyo last year.
