I just picked up a copy of Wargames Illustrated, a magazine that some of you may be aware of, but which doesn't seem to get much interest in our little group.
The magazine itself is published by the guys who do Flames of War. As you would expect FoW takes up a large portion of the magazine (especially since the issue I picked up coincided with the FoW V.3 release). However, this was not my main reason for buying it. The current issue featured an article about the Warlord Games' Zulu War range that I wanted to read. Alongside this there were a couple of other battle reports of African tribal warfare written up by Rick Priestley and Jervis Johnson (Jervis lost his game as anyone who reads White Dwarf would expect). These articles covered Hail Caesar, Black Powder (both by Mr. Priestley) and a game called Death in the Dark Continent which focuses on tribes, colonists and explorers that looked pretty cool.
Anyway, one of the things that impressed me about the magazine was the sheer scale and specialization of some people's armies. And this is coming from someone who buys Space Marines by the company rather than by the squad. The sheer amount of minis, rules, scenery and scales available is mind boggling considering that most of us live in a world where there are only 2 or 3 big games. It is well worth a read, if only to see the work that has gone into the submitted articles. I wonder what the state of our hobby would be if we'd all started out with this instead of White Dwarf.

Re: Wargames Illustrated
WI is indeed a good magazine especially if you are into historical gaming. Even if I don't ever intend to play the periods in question it's still cool to see people's armies, terrain etc. JJ, RP and the Perry's all appear quite regularly.
They also have some pretty good subscription deals. Last time they offered a FOW box set, an historical vignette or a perry Bros. Plastic box IIRC. They don't have anything at the moment however.
I have the last couple of years at my secret base.
