DK returns was aces, both as a comic and the more recent animation. I recently read "year zero". It was good, but so similar to the 1st batman movie (bale) I couldn't help but wish I'd read it before seeing the movie rather than after.

I time-traveled back through this thread a bit, and despite the dire warnings, watched "Prometheus". sigh..... Soooooo close to being good! After the absolutely gorgeous, mysterious and portentous opening, it just devolved into too many monsters and most of them just did not make a lot of sense. Black oil ebola goop, which dissolves you alive, but not before knocking up your girlfriend. Alien/earthworms, who either much through you like an apple or you or somehow transform you into a bulletproof berzerker, the delToro tentacle special, just because, the Engineers themselves and the obligitory (though very well played, they all have been) Android. I don't think I'll spoil anything by commenting he does get his head ripped off and ends the movie a talking hand puppet. I mean, that makes 3 out of 4 who end up like that, shouldn't come as a surprise by now.
I, in all honesty, will go on record saying Aliens vs. Predator is a better film.
Did sort of put me in the monster movie mood though. I think I'll go track down "The Thing". Have not seen that in years.

I watched Oblivion and World War Z over the weekend. Found both pretty entertaining, worth a watch I reckon.

I loved Prometheus when it was in the theatres as I wasn't expecting anything and didn't know it was a parallel Universe to the Giger franchise. Watching it on DVD alongside the other Alien movies 1, 2 and 3 it doesn't match up. A great movie theatre film but it's no Bladerunner.
My next movie to watch is Bride of Frankenstein.

My antidote to Prometheus was to watch "The Thing". Eeeeeeeuughkk. That thing still holds up as the standard all other icky tentacled horrors from outerspace are measured against.
How could I have forgotten Kurt Russel was in it?! A Kurt Russel film fest may be in order. If "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Escape from New York" constitute a "fest".

"The thing" is easily my favourite Kurt Russell movie. So many good scenes. If you have the DVD, the commentary is well worth a listen. It's basically Russell and carpenter just shooting the shit 20-odd years later.

Kurt's the man! Big Trouble in Little China is one of my all-time favourites. His film 'Soldier' is not bad too, quite underrated imho.
The Thing prequel they made recently was OK, not as good as the Kurt Russell film (which is a case of the remake eclipsing the original), but worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Seconding Primer as being some hard-core capital-letters Science Fiction. Made on a shoestring budget, too. But you'll want to take notes and watch it two or three times so you can figure out what the hell is going on.

(Incidentally, it's on YouTube too.)
