I need to see this Daredevil show. Always one of my favorite characters.

Watched "The Great Martian War 1913–1917" (http://www.history.co.uk/shows/the-great-martian-war) last night. It's a mockumentary of the Martian invasion of 1913 using lots of interviews with 'survivors' (soldiers, nurses, civilians) with modified WWI footage of soldiers fighting large alien war machines.
I really enjoyed it - very "All Quiet on the Martian Front". Recommended!

Got the Christmas and New Year movies lined up. What are your favourite films for the winter holidays?

Tis the season
I have a soft spot for the "51" Christmas Carol.

We used to watch that on TV every year with my mom.

I like to watch a Bond on Xmas day. As they always used to be on telly around that time in childhood I have a soft spot for a seasonal 007 viewing..naffer=better. Moonraker this year I think!
My wife and I seem to fall into watching a few Harry Potters this time of year too. Cosy innit. A bit like thumbsucking.
Not movies, but Box of Delights for sure is on the yuletide list, as are BBC productions of MR James Ghost Stories for Xmas. Nothing particularly grown up in that list, sorry.

Re: The Movie Thread
Just FYI, while constructing buildings on the living room floor these past few nights, I have also been binge watching Ash VS Evil Dead. It is actually very good. Much like the original movies, funny/scary/utterly OTT, and completely dependent upon you considering Bruce Campbell to be awesome. Fortunately, I do, and have been very much enjoying the show. And, I thought the daemon was very well depicted. Despite having watched a fair few horror/fantasy movies in my time, I hadn't seen that blurry/jittery effect before, and I rather like it. Also, Lucy Lawless is in it. This is a good thing. Trust me.
So, Ash VS Evil Dead: watch it, it's good.
Also, I've just finished Jessica Jones on Netflix. This is quality TV. AVsED is fun, but hardly Emmy winning stuff, whereas JJ is genuinely important TV, I think. Should win plenty of awards, primary of which should award for a TV show with a female lead because it's vital to the plot and not to attract male fans. There's a lot of good stuff in there about power and how women have an uphill struggle to just be allowed to get on with their day without being hassled etc. Plus, it's a very atmospheric TV show, with great acting across the board. Like Daredevil, but better. No, really.
So, Jessica Jones: watch it, even before you watch Ash VS Evil Dead.

Re: The Movie Thread
Today I watched Ex Machina, a very good sci fi thriller all about AI and the moral questions around it. Very atmospheric, very well acted. Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac (wot is in Star Wars) and a young lady who is also very good but whose name escapes me (because I hadn't seen her in owt apart from this film. Regardless, she's a good actress and a lot of the film's effectiveness hangs on that). It's written and directed Alex Garland, who wrote The Beach and various other things. I'd very much recommend it to anybody who likes a bit of thoughtful sci fi.

I'll definitely check that out. I think this is his first directing job, but writing wise Alex Garland has a pretty great pedigree as he also wrote Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and the Dredd screenplay of course (he named Peachtrees after a cafe where he met John Wagner to discuss how he would approach the script).me_in_japan wrote:Today I watched Ex Machina, a very good sci fi thriller all about AI and the moral questions around it. Domhnall Gleeson was just amazing in Dredd as the terrified hacker, so versatile in the roles he can pull off.
