Rorke's Drift was sort of a sideshow to Isandlwana, which occurred the same day. At Rorke's Drift, 150 British infantry held off over 3,000 Zulus. At Isandlwana, one of the most advanced armies in the world was soundly thrashed by ten times their number of Zulus.

If you've got 45 minutes spare, give this a listen: In Our Time: The Zulu Nation's Rise and Fall.

Ennui: I didn't say anything about 'Filthy savages' as you quote. Please read my posts over. Yes you should watch Zulu, it is a good film. :) Nothing creepy, very accurate I would say and a classic.

-edit- Apologies if this image was portrayed or given it was definitely not my intention. I blame Micheal Caine.
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

I also agree there should be a little community educational opportunity would be a great benefit for those without a great deal of knowledge of great historic moments in Imperial history. ;) (Moments when the British Empire didn't lose to men armed with spears and cowhide shields.)

But, I hate to be a wet blanket, but ... technically don't you have to wait till Christmas to open it?
Yeah, I have to wait, but thats part of the fun of Christmas right?

Incidentally, one of the reports I read about the Anglo-Zulu war said that at Rorke's drift all of the British fatalities were caused by rifle fire rather than by spears. The Zulus had a lot of guns, though they were of a much lower quality than the British Martini-Henrys.
The more I think about it, the more the Zulus sound like Orks. :D
Yes, very true, but that kills part of the romance of the whole battle right? Part of the apocryphal retelling of history is where war-gaming usually picks up from rather then the "accurate" retelling of it. Anyway, it should be really fun to play "Zulu" pretending to be wither Michael Caine or that other guy or the burly Sarge in the movie. :D

And fighting for the Zulu side one can take pride in knowing you up against British Imperialism. :D

(Are there any Zulu models with rifles? That would be pretty cool.)

Oh, and that was a good podcast, In our Time. I didn't like some of the comments of the host, but it was very informative and I liked how the guests really tried to weave the different historical threads together.

Did AGP not make a post on this topic about the nature of war? Just wondering why it was deleted, as it was a breath of fresh air, is all...

I did, but on reflection it was a little off-topic and possibly somewhat inflammatory.

fairly do's. I'm a great believer in freedom of expression, especially amongst friends, and that extends to retracting one's own statements. Carry on :)
