Traditional Hollywood film production and distribution makes simultaneous international releases very difficult. Many people don't realize that editing and effects work is being done, in many cases, right up to the week of release when the prints get made and shipped in canisters straight to theatres. International distribution deals often depend on how well the film does in the US and Canada, although blockbusters are negotiated in advance more and more nowadays. As Prim notes, securing popular voice talent for dubbing takes time, as does translating the script and perhaps re-editing the film to comply with local content laws. Many films with textual content (like the magical books and newspapers in Harry Potter) have those scenes edited or reshot in major languages. So it often ends up being a few months before a film reaches overseas theatres.

I think Star Wars Episode I was one of the first movies to attempt a simultaneous release in major international markets. Now that digital projectors are commonplace and the editing of in-movie text can be done digitally, simultaneous releases are getting somewhat easier, but are still uncommon.

I appreciate that translation takes time, as does voice dubbing, but what irks me is that they can't get their collective bums in gear and do all that before it's released. Sign a few non-disclosure agreements, send out the script a year in advance, send out any non-CG stuff (which will be done ages before the CG stuff is done) and have them dub that. You dont need a fully rendered movie to record a voice track. For example, most of europe seems to have coped just fine, no?

Not really sure why it happens like that because they know they are going to be releasing the movie in a heap of languages eventually. They should be able have it done before the movie comes out. No excuse in my book... I can't believe that I am in full agreement with MIJ on this one. The wrold must be coming to an end.

I got neither. I wasn't expecting an Alien sequel (indeed, I thought the very notion was ridiculous), and a run-of-the-mill SF movie would have been excellent. What I actually got was a confusing two-hour mess that didn't do nearly as good a job of exploring the nature of faith and human origins as it thought it was.

I saw it this weekend because the previous Saturdy night I went to see the Hitch-hiker's Guide To the Galaxy Radio Show - Live. That was a much better use of my free time and money, even if I did end up with the Sirius Cybernetics Corp. song stuck in my head for three days.

Well, the German and Italian-speaking regions get it in August like we do, so their dubbing and distribution probably introduced delays as well. (But the French and Spanish-speaking regions seem to have gotten it quickly, lucky them.)

Feeling a bit out of sorts today so I watched Bill and Teds after work and it made me laugh a lot. Haven't seen it in at least 10 years or more. It's still great.
Here are some of my favourite scenes of Napoleon for the French players on here.

I love it when the history teacher says to them at the start of the film. You are going to fail this course because so far all that we have gathered is that 'Caesar.... was a salad dressing dude'. :)

Just to get back about my movie watching. My wife and I watched labyrinth , and although it did reek of the 80s at points, and David Bowie did keep breaking into song, overall it was a good movie. The design of the various beasties, some of which only appear for 5 seconds, is particularly good.

I also watched the Chronicles of Riddick again yesterday. I really didn't care for it at all the first time I saw it (in the movie theatre when it came out), but it's kinda growing on me (yesterday was my 3rd time to watch it.) It actually works quite well as a snippet of a fantasy universe. It doesn't really world build quite as much as it could, but each scene/location has its merits. The teacup scene is a good un :)

Today or tomorrow I'm going to watch Undeworld:awakening. I rarely have high hopes for the underworld movies, which is silly, as generally they've been not bad. I watched UW:evolution a couple days ago, and it wasn't bad at all.

Does anybody have any recommendations for any good fantasy/SF movies that I (or others) may not have seen? I'm in a movie mood...
