Wayland - Mixed signals?

Post by Primarch » Tue Aug 23, 2011 9:32 pm

I just got the latest Wayland Games newsletter. Contained therein was this rather odd choice of sales pitch:
Let's be honest, the Grey Knights haven't made Warhammer 40K quite so fun lately. So we picked up a copy of the Warhammer Fantasy starter box Island of Blood and had great fun battling the ratty hordes of Skaven against the shining (and well scrubbed) High Elf batallion in a clash of chivalrous perfection and maniacal cunning.

Similarly Chaos Daemons seem to have ruined Warhammer Fantasy for many. So why not pick up the Warhammer 40K starter box Assault On Black Reach? Whether you choose to lead the horde of Orks and their Deff Koptas flying overhead or organise the noble Space Marines to repel the greenskin advance is up to you. Or simply swap sides and play again!
Grey Knights have ruined 40K so you should play Fantasy. At the same time Daemons have ruined Fantasy (which edition are they playing?) so you should play 40K. Does anyone else find this incredibly confusing? Surely the answer would be to play neither game? Very strange.

I'm pretty sure that they're suggesting that one take a break from their main game if they're feeling frustrated by poorly written rules. By picking up the starter set for either game, they won't run into the imbalances of the codexes that they're complaining about, and they'll ostensibly be able to enjoy learning a new game.

Sounds like a pretty straightforward money making strategy to me.

Thats a suprisingly well thought out and positive response given that you hate Warhammer. :D :D :D

I reckon they've got a tone of the starter sets that they want to offload;)

This is the same whiny thing that has been ongoing since 2nd edition. A lot of people do not understand that it is possible to lose because you are not the worlds best player, it is easier to blame the codex.

Do you remember the unbeatable:
Blood Angels with feel no pain
Trygons
Thunderwolf cavalry
Chimera spam
Khorne blood Cruschers
Nob bikers
Obliteratos lists
Dark angels cheap rhino
Eldar harlequins in falcon
a.s.o.

agreed, 100%

Basically, when a new book comes out, people need to find new ways to beat it, and that means losing at first, till you find out the good/bad points of the new list. People dont like to blame themselves for losing, so something else has to be the problem; in this case, the new book.

I laughed when I read that. Wayland is I imagine rightfully pissed about the overseas sales ban and is having a hard time saying anything nice about GW, yet still needs to sell their product to stay in business.
And as for GK and Daemons "ruining" the game, like Codex creep is anything new. If you are a competitive gamer, play chess for Crissake!
...and now his Head was full of nothing but Inchantments, Quarrels, Battles, Challenges, Wounds, Complaints, Amours, and abundance of Stuff and Impossibilities.....
