In Memory of Robin Williams

Post by kojibear » Wed Aug 13, 2014 8:22 am

It is sometimes easy for us to miss news here in Japan, especially if we are not checking the internationals news sites online or on cable TV. In case you had not heard, Robin Williams died a few days ago.

I remember growing up watching and being entertained by Robin Williams. He was kind of like a crazy uncle that was both hilarious and a little unnerving because of his wild unpredictability - not helped of course by his battle with drugs and alcohol.

His style of humor and his talent was not for everyone, naturally, but I always found myself looking forward to seeing him when he was on TV or in a movie.

I also found out that he was a Warhammer 40k fan. No one is sure of the details, but he did visit GW stores and play games. I can imagine him being a hilarious and yet annoying person to play against as he would know doubt be telling a narrative using his voice talents to do individual voices for each one of his miniatures. I think I would have loved that though. :)

Anyway, to Robin Williams, a fellow 40k fan and gaming geek I say a fond farewell and rest in peace.

Apparently he was an Eldar player. He was also an avid Call of Duty player and even named his daughter Zelda after the Nintendo game.

'Tis indeed a shame

It is a real shame indeed. I loved his stand up in Robin Williams: Live on Broadway. I'm watching it again to laugh in his honor. And his part in Good Will Hunting will always be remembered by me.

I'm sure he'll be missed by his gaming friends.

My condolences to his family and suppose a whole world of people enjoyed his humor.

I had heard he was a 40k gamer. He seemed like a decent human being, and it was a shock to hear the news. I didn't enjoy everything he did, but the good stuff was very good..I enjoyed him in World According to Garp, Fisher King, Dead Poet's Society, Insomnia..as King of the Moon in Baron Munchausen..the Genie in Aladdin..and recently World's Greatest Dad was a black, black comedy, edgy and hilarious. We all know him as a comedian, but in the above he proved that he certainly had the acting chops too. It's a shame we won't see any more from him.

I was totally bummed to hear of his passing, he's always been a favourite comic of mine.
He said on his reddit AMA last year that he owned several 40k armies, but admitted he'd never actually played the game.
He was a big Call of Duty fan, but said he didn't play online because 'getting your ass kicked by an 11 year old is humbling!'
So many games, so little time....
