@Prim: I think you're rather missing the point of advent. Advent calendars usually (traditionally, at least) don't contain chocolate at all. I tolerate the ones that do, but I don't hold them to be good examples of what an advent calendar actually is. They're a means of counting down to Christmas that a little kid can understand, focussing them on an important event and teaching them that good things come to those who wait. In an ideal world, advent calendars would be home made and not contain chocolate at all. In today's busy modern world, however, few folks can be arsed making their own, so they buy em. Cadbury et al are just in it for a quick buck, sure, but at least they're up front about it, and provide something which is explicitly and implicitly related to Advent. I really see no need at all for GW (or any other non-Christmas related company) to use advent as a means to sell stuff. Companies that give stuff away for free (albeit to generate goodwill=increase sales later) at least do so in a manner appropriate to Christmas, and they have the decency to toss the customer a freebie as a gesture of seasonal goodwill. Would it have killed GW to gve away rules for Belakor for free? How many more belakor minis would thy have sold? It's the attitude of clawing Every. Last. Penny. out of the customers that galls me, and them using Advent, a period associated with sharing, generosity and self-restraint to do so is what makes it especially bad.

Selling me an unhealthy product, wrapped in environmentally damaging materials and increasing my chocolate consumption four-fold, encourages abstinence and engenders the true meaning of Christmas, whereas sending a free email (which I voluntarily signed up for) and letting me know a product has just been released is an unforgivable sin on the part of the company sending the email.

You don't think it looks that way. I know you are more intelligent than that.

The problem is not that they are announcing a new product. One would have to be as dumb as the GW sales tactic in question to think that was the case. The problem is how they are doing it. It makes them look like cheapskates and I think it is insulting to consumers. To me it looks like they are trying to make you feel like you are luckily being given the opportunity to buy from them. An advent calendar with downloadable wallpaper for your computer behind each window, or even something funny you can look at but not download would be great. This is just shitty sales.

Ah-ha! My cunning plan worked! Actually I am an ignorant dimwit, but due to my ruse of wearing glasses and using long words I managed to appear somewhat intelligent. Huzzah! :D

Most major retail companies shamelessly use Christmas as an excuse to hock you things you don't really want or need. The whole thing has been commercialized from start to finish. Why single out one company for being a part of this? As I said, it's become fashionable to hate on GW (though Spev was doing it before it was cool). If emails you receive from them irritate you so much that you feel a need to vent about them on the web, just stop receiving them. The time spent on the initial post could have been better spent unsubscribing from the newsletter. It's not like anything they do of any import isn't spread all over the web anyway. It seems people are looking for an excuse to be angry.

Actually I'm more distressed with the 1 page of stats and special rules for 3€ thing. Are we going back to 2nd ed where same characters had different rules based on the supplement?

Honestly I'm not that worried for the quality of my enjoyment as I only play with you guys and so far everybody has been very sensible but I think it will make things more insular as different groups will ban this or that stuff just like FW is being banned in some tournaments.

I don't mind some of the GW 2013 season shenanigans stuff as long as I'm told in advance. But I'm less than reasonable when people try to get crap pass under my radar because GW put in a book that can only be bought online the rules for this or that gizmo I never saw before.

There seems to be a real flurry of supplements and add ons recently. Big, expensive glossy books of rules so you can buy that superheavy or special bundle and slap it on the table. Little expensive downloads for that new sexy special character. They are milking it from every angle.

Merry Christmas from GW, pay us more money!

I'm guessing that somebody drunk too much at GW HQ. 10 pounds for some rules and fluff that apparently is not even new... Probably after an offering that it's halfway decent (Kill Team) they had to go back to the usual $$$$

Meanwhile a good site like Beasts of War give you a free warhammer 40k downloadable set for free if you sign up. Now that's how you do it gw! Maybe buy something and we will give away some junk. Even that people would maybe give you a thumbs up on. But never ever seen people happy with a discount on already high priced items that we really don't need.
