Since this thread is about me I guess I should eventually respond (actually, I didn't even know it existed until a short while ago). Look like I will be playing after all, and my army will be: (insert drumroll here): The Tau!
(I am also going to try out Warmachine) Thanks to everyone for the advice!
Which Army?
Re: Which Army?
Well, they are free, so thats good. Having seen Badruck's Tau, you will need to pick a few things up to make them playable (mainly tanks and some elite units), but you should have enough to start playing some smaller games. The Underdweller wrote:Since this thread is about me I guess I should eventually respond (actually, I didn't even know it existed until a short while ago). I'm sure John can give you some advice about playing them and which units to take. He's not on this board yet so you'll have to use regular email.

Yes, free is good (thank you, Badruck!). I also think the Tau (and Kroot) look pretty cool and like the fluff around them. Don't know how difficult they are to paint, but I guess I'll find out...

Re: Which Army?
from personal experience, kroot are ace to paint. dynamic models, and simple to shade and highlight. (btw, krootox are actually one of the better units in the Tau army. I'd recommend em.)
Tau themselves are a bit of a fiddle to paint, as their armour is basically made up of a cloth undersuit (good for washing and drybrushing) and smooth armour plates on top (a bit finicky, frankly.) The same goes for the battle suits and drones, but without the easy-paint undersuit. That said, I'm known to be a bit fussy when it comes to painting, so if youre a stick-some-slap-on-em-and-go kinda painter, then you shouldnt have any trouble with them.
Finally, I know it's very early days yet, but once youve gotten a few games under your belt and feel like getting into Tau a wee bit more, ForgeWorld do some of the goshdarned coolest Tau stuff imaginable. Gnarlocs are boss, and the FW battlesuits (especially the broadsides) are also very, very cool. Theyre a tad more expensive than regular models (and the flyers are a LOT more expensive) but theyre just so darn cool. Anyway, Id leave that as something for the future. For the moment, good luck with painting up your kroot and your tau. If you have any questions about specifics, just ask. I aint painted many of em, but I have done a few (and have a lot sitting in a box in my spare room, waiting for the day when Ifeel in need of some Greater Good...)

Re: Which Army?
Thanks! I haven't painted anything except a few lead miniatures for Dungeons and Dragons during High School, so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions
