Re: New Chaos Lists
Btw- with regards to the new daemon engines: can you give them marks of specific gods? And if so, would a nurgle Maulerfiend be not completely crap?

No, none of the new beasties have the option to take marks because they are vehicles.me_in_japan wrote:Btw- with regards to the new daemon engines: can you give them marks of specific gods?

Re: New Chaos Lists
I am a big fan of the new models much more warp-tainted space marines than space marines with spikes.

Re: New Chaos Lists
The marines are defo better. The daemon engines...less so. Well, I'll be honest - I hate em. Big ol kids toys. But, I was thinking that a skaven hell pit abomination would make a very nice nurgle maulerfiend, if appropriately clad in green stuff armor bits and suchlike. Tbh, looking at the minis it seems daft to make em vehicles, as they quite clearly have organic shapes and skin. I'd have a much easier time believing they were daemons armored as machines, or with machine parts, than believing they were vehicles that had been possessed by daemons and changed so their shape became daemonic.

Re: New Chaos Lists
well today (hooray and hoorah) my chaos 'dex arrived. My initial thoughts are:
minor plus points:
1) smaller than expected. This is good cos I'm going to have to carry it around, and bad cos it costs a lot of money. Overall, though, small is good. I've had it up to here with huge rulebooks.
2) Oblits can now take the mark of nurgle. While the basic models are horrible, it at least opens up the potential for a nice scratchbuild, should the fancy take me. Likewise the choppyblits. I quite like the concept of obliterators, and I reckon I could do something nicely borg-like, but with wiretacles going all around and through it and whatnot. We shall see...
3) Marks of Chaos are bought per model, not per unit. The mark of nurgle now costs me 21 pts per marine unit, as opposed to 50 previously. Ta muchly
Also, Warpsmiths and Preachermen can take marks. Might be fun to have a nurgle preacher...
4) Typhus allows you to make all your cultists plague zombies! mwahahahahaha!
5) Maulerfiends are not complete poo. My idea for a Hellpit Abomination-based one may actually come to fruition. I'm in the mood for some choppychoppy conversion action. Would like to make it as nurgly as poss, ruleswise, but it would appear it is not to be. Meh, its not like my nurgle dread was actually nurgley either.
6) All the powers/gifts and so on are pretty random, but will not completely shaft you. Potentially kinda fun. Completely non-power-gamey, and of this I approve.
7) lesser daemons are out, daemonic allies are in. Hello Plaguebearers! (as opposed to last ed, when I just used plaguebearers anyway. It's nice to see that the game rules are keeping up with the in-my-head rules for a change
)
Minor minus points:
1) No more dreadnauts! Yah! Boo! I liked my FW dread. Meh, I know Helbrutes are just dreads by another name, but it's the principle. It's like calling an eldar dreadnaught a wraithlord...grumblegrumblegrumble...
2) All units come with a champion. Don't really want em, but there ya go. Their special "piffpaffinnafacewivagauntlet" special rule is kinda cute though
)
Humungous plus point that vastly outweighs any other problems:
1) Not a single one of my existing Nurgle army minis needs a single weapons swap to be completely WYSIWIG legal. Hoo-frickin-ray!
Overall, not many complaints from me, for a change. Sure, the new daemon engine minis are poop, but hey, I dont need to buy em, do I? I quite like the layout of the new book, and the foldout 3 page rules summary at the back is pretty handy looking. New Chaos 'dex: Thumbs up from MiJ.

Re: New Chaos Lists
Here's something I heard listening to podcasts:
The Plague Zombies entry says that they can't take options, and adding additional cultists to the unit is listed as an option. Therefore zombies can only be taken in groups of 10.
This is very sad, but that is the rules as written. Everyone is saying it will probably get FAQed soon. In the meantime I suspect everyone else is ignoring this technicality.

Re: New Chaos Lists
Meh, it's that kind of rules lawyering that bugs me about the 40k scene. I'll be taking my zombies in hordes as Romero intended, and anybody who doesn't like it has the right to not play me

Re: New Chaos Lists
Hordes of numbers divisible by the holy 7. At the moment it's hordes of 0 as I don't actually own any, but I have 21 incoming cultists from badruck, and with the revelation that they can be zombs I'm toying with picking up a box of fantasy zombies, assuming the parts will be compatible. Haven't checked that out tho.
Incidentally, it's not like I have a surfeit of troop choices anyway. I have plague marines and...plague marines. Of course right now I can't recall if cultists are troops or elite. They're not elite, are they? That'd be pants-on-head daft. Assuming theyre troops I can still manage 40 of the buggers, even in units of 10. It's not like I'm going to rock up with 140 of em, is it? Can you imagine how long that'd take to paint???
