Most of the forums are indeed awash with controversy surrounding the ally rules. I wonder if this will break 40K, or will people just ignore the rules as a whole. Or maybe it`ll be an opponent`s permission kind of thing (like Forgeworld). I`ve already heard suggestions of Vulcan=IG melta vet spam! It should be interesting to see what this does to the game (and the gamers).

Might be, it will make the game into a blood sport, and transform gamers into vessels of rage and madness.

By my reckoning it looks to be an official part of 6th edition, that, by default, will not require player consent.
GW has put up an allies page on their site,

Here it is:

http://www.gamesworkshop.com/gws/conten ... eMode=true

They didn't go through the trouble of doing this for fantasy allies ( which were for all intents and purposes, purely optional)

Nothing I have heard has said anythibg about it being opponent's consent, but until we have the book in hand we will have to wait and see. I am hoping there is something in place to stop Army A's rules being used by Ally B and vice versa as that would solve most problems straight off the bat.
I do like the idea as I think it could be a lot of fun, allowing for some cool team-ups and so forth, at the same time, it has the potential to encourage a certain type of play that I hope we wont see round here in the same way we dont see BoLS style lists.

Slightly off topic, but Forge World is moving away from opponents consent these days as well. The latest books have units marked as either approved for 40K or apocalypse only.

More and more I am looking forward to getting a copy of the rules in my hands, but at the same time I am wondering if they will be the last set of GW rules I pick up for a long time. IF 6th ed. is terrible, I wonder what will happen with NagoyaHammer 2013?
Not long to go now.

As I understand it, army wide rules would only apply in-faction. I'm inferring this from the discussion on the reddit page about the 3 tiers of ally friendliness, with the top tier allowing faction A's ICs to join faction B's units, the next tier being that you can just have the units from faction A and B on the table together, and the bottom tier being you can have em in the table together, but if faction A and faction B units get too close they have to make Ld checks or similar, and if they fail they stand there growling at each other instead of doing what you want. Basically, GW seem to have set out to allow you to field two different factions, but not interplay them too much.

Agree with MIJ. It doesn't appear that much different from team play under 5th edition.

If they are core rules, I can`t see any reason NOT to mix up armies and use allies all the time. Any player of even moderate experience knows what their own army can`t do well. You can plug up some of your army`s weaknesses easily with these rules (unless you use Tyranids, it seems). Great sales ploy by GW; everyone will be getting some allies to fill in the blanks a bit. I pity the player who has to face my Chaos Marine/Daemons mix...I think I`ll chose Fateweaver to lead my Marines, Terminators, and Obliterators! Awwww, C`mon, you can`t tell me that isn`t fluffy?!

BTW, more rules are getting leaked via Q & A over on BOLS. Other than allies, most of them look pretty good.

from kittoris at BoLs with a rulebook, answering questions
battle brothers - these allies are truly freinds and benefit from each othersuniversal special rules, psychic powers, and everything, they act as one force.

Ohhh, and Chaos Marines and Daemons are battle brothers, so a Fateweaver lead force is completely viable. Can you imagine all of your Terminators and Obliterators re-rolling their 2+ armor saves?! And with the supposed nerf to power weapons (AP3), they will be virtually unkillable. It looks like more wonderful "play-testing" by GW ("Hey, let`s let people include allies in their armies. We can sell a lot more units that way. What could go wrong?")

The obvious way to avoid that problem would be to just not do it. I have a sneaking suspicion GW don't care for power gaming, and just dont factor it in to their play testing.
