I'm leafing through the October White Dwarf right now. Maybe it's because I don't know the fluff or what proper Chaos Space Marines ought to look like, but in my opinion, the new models are amazing. They blow the old marines-with-spikey-bits look out of the water. And I say that as someone with no interest in playing a Chaos army.

the mutilators/old oblits were and still are gash. Of all the models in the old chaos line up these were the worst, and yet GW persist in using them. Worse, they use them as the basis for a new troop type. Horrible sculpts. Horrible.

True, true. I love the idea though and a unit or two would make a really fun conversion project and dead easy assuming there are plastic chaos termis......... I wonder if there is anyway of taking them as troops.........

me_in_japan wrote:Its a bit vexing, as I do actually have a CSM army, and if I want to use it I need the codex. However, 6800yen is a ridiculous amount of money. That's 3000 yen more than the exchange rate makes it, which is just rude. I'm going to have to find a way to get a hold of the UK book. That, or give up on my CSM, which would be a shame, as I rather like em. I'm getting sufficiently fed up of being shafted by GW that I'm actually considering just not bothering with 40k anymore. I mean, its not like I actually play it these days anyway...

oh, and having taken a good long look at the new CSM models, I can say:

The daemon engines, all 3 of em, are irredeemably bad. Seriously. Not one of them should have made it out of the concept sketch phase. They look like children's toys. They remind me a lot of the big monstahs from WHFantasy, actually (mooaarr teeth!). The sculpts themselves are not terrible, but the concept behind them is pure crap. Doesnt matter if youve got Michaelangelo sculpting it, if its a stupid idea, its a stupid idea.

The raptors/warp talons are decent models. I still maintain that they look far too generic to be used in a mono-legion army, but in and of themselves theyre ok. I'm curious as to what the difference is in fluff terms between a raptor and a warp talon, and, critically, what my floaty nurgle guys will be proxying as this edition...

The aspiring champ I rather like, especially since he's not finecrap. Dynamic pose, nice detail, looks chaosy without being just spikeymarine. Likewise the sorceror. Bit generic for my tastes, but fine for what he is.

The hellsmith is the best of the bunch. The studio paint job does nothing for the mini, but theres a lot of nice detail in the sculpt and with a bit of jiggery pokery he could look quite menacing and scary. The dark apostle is a close second. Nice sculpt, nice pose. Amusingly analogous to the Imperial equivalent.
Give it a week or so and the new Codex will be available in ways that dare not be mentioned in decent company.

And don't forget the mantra " Hate GW, not 40K".

I agree totally about the big monster thingies. Saw a load of stuff that looked like them in Toy R Us when I went there with my kids the other day.

And yes, the oblits are crying for new minis.

So far, the only thing I have really gotten excited about has been the cultists. Do much conversion potential there.

The chosen are nice too, but the cultists (both the miniatures and the concept) have made me happy.

Oddly enough, I have spent a good part of the weekend ogling the new stuff.
I will deffo be getting the Hell Drake. I know some folks aren't fans but I think it looks pretty ace, especially compared to the Storm Talon.

The Fiends just haven't grown on me though. I think it's the 4 legs that ruin it. If it was on two legs it would look better IMHO sorta like one of the old ED209 dreadnoughts crossed with one of the new Juggernauts. As Dan the man pointed out though it appears to be pretty big. It will be interesting to see the rules.

The plastic Aspiring Champion looks cool but I have plenty. I like the Raptors too although I have more than enough of the metal ones to justify getting them.

The Warsmith and Dark apostle also look quite good but I won't be rushing out to get 'em.

As for the new stuff looking too generic, I think none of them would look out of place in the traditional clour schemes of Tzeentch/Khorne/Slaanesh. A few icons here and there would also help. Nurgle might be a bit of a problem but then again it always has been.

Okay, I gave in and ordered the codex and one box of new Raptors. I used a discount seller on eBay who ships with realistic shipping costs...which is about the cheapest way to get those items into my hands. I want to see what the Raptors look like up close and personal.

Still, when I saw the prices on GW`s site, I was like No-F@%$#?g-Way! The 50 bucks for a codex is just criminal. The shamelessness of their wallet gouging makes me angry. Who wanted hardcover codices? Can we at least have a choice like some other miniature companies give us? Also, the cost of one plastic Aspiring Champion kind of makes me feel like vomiting in my own mouth...disgusting!

Hardeharhar, yes, let's all laugh at the laggardy painter. But ahah! You forget that this would be a nurgle beast, and that I have an airbrush! The last laugh will be on you, ohyesitwill

After a good look at the models I have made the choice not to play chaos this go around the models just don't look cool. They put most of the modles in fine cast that I would have liked to see redone. epic fail
