Imperial Guard as allies - pros and cons

Post by jus » Fri Jul 20, 2012 11:31 pm

How would a secondary contingent of imperial guard compliment a primary contingent of blood angels at about 1500 points

would a commissar, and a platoon with some heavy weapons be more of a waste of points than any real benefit?
Does imperial guard only become effective with vehicles?

I like the idea of massed infantry, not many tanks (if any at all) what are some cool combos that jive well with blood angels?

At 1500 points, you aren't going to be getting a lot of IG as allies and everything you do get will be one less power armoured, feeling no pain, assault marine that you can take.
The strengthof the IG lies in either massive numbers or in combined arms (infantry, tanks and artillery), mixing them in as allies you wont really get that, but the extra heavy weapons and troops squads will give your Angels a bit more versatility. Don't expect them to be a game changer, but they should allow you some more interesting tactical choices.
Bearing in mind that a single IG troops choice can cost over 1000 points if you try, I would aim to spend no more than 250 points for the whole allied force.

If you like the idea, go for it. That is reason enough to go for it.

I'm planning on a commissar, I penal legion squad , and a few Ogryn. Will it have a big impact? Don't know. But it is fluffy and fun.

I reckon a bunch of imperial guard painted to look like a Baal Planetery Defense Force would look pretty cool.

HQ: CCS with AC 60pts
Troop: PCS with AC 40pts
2x Infantry squads with AC 120pts
5x Heavy Weapon Teams with AC 375pts.

Total: 595 pts for 40W and 19ACs

M.

PD: for 65 more pts grab Rambo for the laughs.

How it plays with the rest of your army shouldn't really matter. The question you should be asking is "why would a bunch of IG be fighting alongside a bunch of BA in this particular battle?"

If you can answer that question satisfactorily (and there are plenty of decent reasons this particular pair could team up) then you are golden. The choice of IG units should be made on a fluff basis, not a "yay this will make my army unbeatable" basis.

Agreed. If you are looking for the most uber combination possible , you find opponents a but thin on the ground.

to be fair, Jus does say in his OP that he's looking for massed infantry, which to my mind is hardly power gaming with IG. If he'd said "I want 6 leman russ tanks to accompany my BA" then I would be a good deal more cynical. A bunch of footslogger IG seems reasonable, to me, especially if they're CC oriented, in a BA stylee.

True that. Thats why I made the PDF suggestion. I figure it would be pretty nifty.

@mij: well, considering that i'm the one who started this thread, i'm pretty sure i'm asking the questions that i want to ask.

So sorry, but "why would a bunch of IG be fighting alongside a bunch of BA" is not the question I'm asking. Granted, its a good question though, and worth discussing, but perhaps in another thread.

Also the choice of IG units i choose, if i ever happen to add any should be made on a fluff basis. Absolutely. But it should also be made on how much money i'm going to spend, as i have no IG models to speak of. So, if i'm going to spend money on something, i'd rather it be somewhat effective rather than purely cosmetic.

....most uber combination possible? ....erm....no, more like mass infantry.

EDIT: baal PDF, i really like that idea. Very good.
