Warhammer 30K

GW has trailers up on their website for Betrayal at Calth, a new Horus Heresy themed boxed set, due for pre-order on the 7th of November.
It has yet to be 100% confirmed if this is the start of GW bringing 30K into their main product stream or if it is just a stand alone game. GW store staff have been told that they cannot take holidays during the product launch, which usually only happens with big releases (new editions etc) and not with limited releases (Space Hulk etc).

Either way, the box contents are rumoured to be 40 marines in MkIV armour, a Contemptor Dread, a unit of Terminators in Heresy style armour and a couple of characters. While the game is listed as Word Bearers Vs. Ultramarines, none of the models have any particular iconography on them. (Shoulder pads etc are available from FW).

Now, I know that marine on marine fights aren't going to appeal to everyone, #cough#M_i_J#cough#, but Eldar and Orks were around at that point in game-time and Tau/Nids/Crons can be used for the alien races encountered during the Crusade.

So, what do people think? Is this the boost that 40K needs to get people playing again? A blatant attempt to cash in on and then ruin FW's hard work? The worst thing to happen in the history of wargaming?

I'm going to buy this set and built my first marines during my winter holiday.

Never really looked at HH - are the rules the same as 40K?

More interested in Gates of Antares than marines v marines...

I want it if the price is reasonable, but GW's pricing have been a little ridiculous lately

More or less. Same basic game, more restrictions on army building.

That said, 30k doesn't really appeal that much. Not enough gribbly bits for my liking. Some nice admech stuff, though.

I said marine on marine, not squishy, slimy, gribbly, mutated marine on marine. :D and even then, it's not like it's as exclusive as the HH would at first apear to be.
But yes, gribbly is definitely at a minimum in this instance. It remains to be seen how much of the range GW take over. Pics doing the rounds online show the new set as being a board game a-la Space Hulk and that Assassins thingie. The minis are multi-pose kits rather than snap fits though, so maybe the board game is the gateway drug for Forge World?

You ought to see a doctor about that cough of yours. Doesn't sound healthy. :D

Which Legion were you going to choose? Or will you do them as a more modern chapter?

Probably this. :D
Seriously though, sounds like a pretty good idea. Not my cuppa, but I can see it being a big hit with the Spesh Mahreen bros. The Horus Heresy is like in all the fluff and books and rules this great big, amazing, dramatic, galaxy shattering drama...... that happened 10,000 years ago sorry you missed it.......
Forgeworld and a gazillion 3rd party manufacturers demonstrate there is a market for power-armored figures. Why not make some more?

@Prim
I'm afraid say I don't know the background of HH well.
I'll decide the chapter after I obtain the set.
