Vanilla, Chocolate or Matcha?
Further to my thread on 'Spearhead' I was wondering what you guys think of the various 40K expansion rules?
Have you played any/all/none of them? Do you like them? How do they stack up against 'vanilla' 40K?
Just in case you were wondering, there are the following 'flavours' available:
Normal 40K
City Fight
Combat Patrol
Kill team
Planet Strike
Apocalypse
Spearhead
Battle Missions
Have I missed any?

Re: Vanilla, Chocolate or Matcha?
Scenarios from IA?
I havent really played most of those except for 2 games of Planetstrike, a few games of Apoc and a couple of Battle Missions. Everyone who entered my tournie this year played through 3 battle missions and at the NagoyaHammer event in GW there was a planetstrike game.
Personally I am SOOOOOO sick of Annihilation/Dawn of War (the only time my dice reliably throw 6s), I really enjoy playing the variant missions.
Also, Matcha.

I have had games of
Normal 40K
City Fight
Combat Patrol
Kill team
Planet Strike
Apocalypse
I have yet to try Battle missions or Spear head.
I like Normal 40k just fine City fight has been the most fun for me so far. That said I have a really soft spot in my heart Combat patrol.
The Forge world missions in the back of the books are certainly something you might want to add to the list.
Aphelion has been very fun none of the missions are balanced but I do not believe they have to be balanced to be fun.
Yesterday I played against the Over Powered Movie Marines.. list it sure was a fun game but I got crushed.

Yeah, thats right, it was a city fight game. I remember the game, but not the mission played. I came pretty close to achieving my main goal but got greedy and sent my sternguard off after the secondary objective. Lesson learned there.Admiral-Badruck wrote:We played City Fight in in Voss's campaign..

Re: Vanilla, Chocolate or Matcha?
On the subject I think the missions in Primes 30k Campaign are lots of fun.. as are a lot of the made up games out there... there is nothing wrong with them... and most of the time they are heaps more interesting than the rules that GW makes... Babab war is very cool I hope more of you will pick up a marine army and join in the fun.

Re: Vanilla, Chocolate or Matcha?
I enjoy the battle missions, mostly because theyre not that different from regular 40k, but have a wee twist to change things up a wee bit.
I think apoc could be fun, so long as it was one on one with both players having equal access to super heavies, tank squads and infantry. Apoc is really, really easy to lose before you roll a single dice.
I also have a soft spot for combat patrol, especially the version badruck came up with. Not competetive, but fun.
And finally, a game I do quite fancy trying is: Planetary Empires. I once played a Mighty Empires campaign back in the day (my skaven vs my mate's high elves) and although it went on for several months, it was the acest series of games ive ever had. Did I ever tell y'all about the time when my half dozen gutter runners took out Tyrion, Teclis, some Dragon knights and a dozen sword masters? oh...I did. Ok then...
That said, ever since planetstrike Ive had the nagging feeling that these expansions are in no way intended to expand the hobby, and are purely there to expand the need for people to buy more models. The only exception to this is Battle Missions, which is Jervis-tastic.

Planetary Empires and New Mighty Empires are not in any way similar to the old Mighty Empires. The rules are served up on about 3 sides of A4 and most of the board seems like you wont ever use it.me_in_japan wrote:And finally, a game I do quite fancy trying is: Planetary Empires. If you can find a copy, the Warhammer General's Compendium has some well done campaign rules in it.

Re: Vanilla, Chocolate or Matcha?
I haven't had the chance to play most of them, but I'd enjoy doing that.
For the most part, the generic games in the rulebook just don't really grab my interest. I like more stylized missions and challenges.
