Anyways, back to Eternal Guard
I was having a read of the Woodies book last night and while they have suffered a bit from the rule changes in 8th they are not completely out of the game IMHO.
They do however suffer from the same 'problem' that all three Elven armies do in this edition. That is, with the stepping up rule they will suffer more casualties in close combat, which hurts these elite armies more compared to the so-called Horde armies.
However, the new strike in initiative order is quite a big boost to all three Elven armies, although Woodies don't get the re-rolls that their Dark and High cousins do.
I think something that will also hurt them is the proliferation of 'Flaming attacks' that are now available and seem to be cropping up more and more often. As well as being good against hydras

flaming attacks are anathema to some of the 'best' Woody units, namely, Dryads, Treekin and Treemen. So much kindling, so little time.
That said, they are still a very mobile army and can still win by carefully co-ordinating their attacks, which is what WFB has always been about anyway. This edition has gotten rid of one lazy tactic that had begun to define the last edition, namely, build your uber Dragon/Greater daemon/Heavy Cav combo - fire at the front of target unit - wipe out the fighting rank - take no hits in return - win combat - run down enemy - rinse and repeat.
