Grand Campaign EXPANSION
Re: Grand Campaign EXPANSION
@ job: hmm ok I can see where you are coming from, and I respect your opinion. Perhaps a more fluff oriented approach would be better than a game changning one? Or little easter egg bonuses to throw in that won't effect the outcome of the game.
My hostage idea, was purely a fluff idea to begin with. The replacement general would just be a different model with a new name, and every else could be the same, but with one different item and different ability. May well change that to everything the hostage general had but different model if we wanted to. Just something to make the stakes a little higher, thus more interesting.
e.g Oh NO! My vampire lord, Count de Cagliostro, gets captured by dwarfs and is taken hostage for ransom.
Not to worry, Count de Monte Cristo takes up the mantle of vampire lord and continues the fight, or chooses to negotiate the exchange of a hex (or pays the ransom somehow) or some other less penalizing condition that anyone can think of.
broken match ups? mm most assuredly. Couple the amazing dispelling abilities of the dwarfs and the innate dispel and dice stealing capabilities and items of the high elves and you get an insane double whammy combo of nigh impenetrable magic defence rather than wise dice. We were getting murdered. I've got about 20 games experience with vampire counts, and I know the army inside out and what completely bones them. You may well have shut down mikes magic completely so imagine how much more potent your dispell gets when combined with high elves. one on one vampire counts can handle dwarf or high elf armies, but not together. If you played a game with vampire counts I'm sure you'd understand.
I'd really like team games to work, because I really co operative play. But lets take a look at some other "broken match ups". Last time Frans and I teamed up we had 5 always strike first Strength 6 great weapon wielding characters in a block of phoenix guard with the works that just tore the entire orc right flank. I despaired for the black orcs, I really did.
What about, hypothetically speaking, facing off against a blood thirster and a treeman together? or 100( one hundred!) blood letters in horde formation, with rerolls to hit and a 2+ ward save against magic? four hydras?
six cannons? double slann on dinosaur things...actually some of those combos sound really fun, but you get the point right.

Thats where you need the 4 cannons or multiple rock lobbas and doom divers.jus wrote:or 100( one hundred!) blood letters in horde formation, with rerolls to hit and a 2+ ward save against magic?
Actually a 100 strong formation of blood letters isnt that scary IF you know its coming and can plan accordingly. VC may have a hard time dealing with it as they have no area/ranged attacks. Other armies may fare better.

All that to say, broken matchups can quite easily be made. In this day and age, where the word on the street is balance and fair play and not being the underdog and not "souring peoples experiences".Thats where you need the 4 cannons or multiple rock lobbas and doom divers.

If someone brings 100 bloodletters in 1 unit, I say they're asking for it.jus wrote:All that to say, broken matchups can quite easily be made. In a regular 'friendly' game like the good folks at Joshin play, (Pikey not withstanding), of course you shouldn't bring any of the above.

But... if you want an exciting campaign... and if you want EPIC... wouldn't those qualify? What about, hypothetically speaking, facing off against a blood thirster and a treeman together? or 100( one hundred!) blood letters in horde formation, with rerolls to hit and a 2+ ward save against magic? four hydras?

They would, but only if your opponent came along expecting an exciting and Epic campaign.job wrote:But... if you want an exciting campaign... and if you want EPIC... wouldn't those qualify? What about, hypothetically speaking, facing off against a blood thirster and a treeman together? or 100( one hundred!) blood letters in horde formation, with rerolls to hit and a 2+ ward save against magic? four hydras?

Some players have the option to field pretty much any combo they like, whilst others are struggling to fill the basic 2000 points or dont want to get involved in an 'arms race.' This can lead to quite a disparity in army strengths.
For example,
When Jus was starting out with Vampires he played one game against Pikey using Count Manfred (who is one of the better characters in the game). Pikey was expecting a less top heavy list and so the game was very one sided.
The next time they played, Jus figured that pulling out Manfred again was mean so he brought a balanced force. Pikey brought an army of Witch Elves specifically because they would destroy any of Jus's units in 2 turns at the most.
2 games that were less fun-for-both-players than they could have been. (Though I'm sure both Pikey and Jus enjoyed one game each).

Re: Grand Campaign EXPANSION
Moral of the story, check with your opponent first to see if they want balanced and interesting or bring the meanest thing your possibly can and club each other over the head. It might also be good to let an opponent know if you are struggling to reach a point limit so things might not be normal.
It's easy to die in the swamp. What's hard is to staying dead.

I think Voss has a good point here communication could have been the key issue... in that game arrangement I would say taking the army you have is some times not the army that wins or is fun to play against...
