Grand Campaign EXPANSION
Grand Campaign EXPANSION
So far the grand campaign has been progressing rather well, the hexes are filling up one by one and participation has also been very good, with great games and stories to tell by all.
but it seems to me, that our beloved grand campaign has been losing a bit steam of late and could use some zest. As such, how about adding some additional rules that add some more flavor and excitement to the campaign.
Heres some ideas I think might be cool to see:
The spoils of war - in-game currency
For each hex your faction owns, it generates a certain amount of revenue each month (real time). This can then be used to buy upgrades, items, bonuses and what not. This makes winning hexes a more meaningful and fun and adds more incentive for players to try harder. However the bonuses should be kept reasonable to avoid cheesing out.
Hex bonus (this has been mentioned by prim, in the grand campaign forum ages ago)
certain bonuses awarded for holding particular hexes i.e, bridge for increased supply lines.
Army Morale:
Each army starts off with i.e 10 morale points, which decrease with each defeat. Once the morale value reaches 0, roll on the poor morale chart and bad things might happen. e.g desertion.
conversely army gains morale with each victory and after a morale value reaches 15, roll on the good morale chart and good things might happen e.g + 20 points to spend on core troops
The hostage general:
In addition to winning a hex, the winner of a round gets to hold the opposing player's general hostage. The general's name is noted down and the winner gets an achievement to be recorded in the annals of the faction's forum.
The model for the hostage general can not be fielded in subsequent games. Nor can the new general have the same list of items and abilities as the one held hostage. The new general must be a different model, given a different set of ability and equipment upgrades, and given a new name.
In order for the opposing player to get his general back, he must either
1. win him back by beating the winning army next game.
2.talk it over with his faction buddies and see if they want to pay a hex in ransom to be able to field him again. Or pay with implemented in-game currency. This gives players a reason to use the faction forums to dicuss things, since the faction forum's are hardly ever touched.
please comment on whether you think this is a good idea or not, and or makes suggestions you might want to add. If there is enough support, maybe put it to a vote to see if an expansion legislation comes to pass.

I'm all jazzed that your excited about the campaign jus, but I would have to say I'm opposed to all the above proposals. So far the grand campaign has been progressing rather well, the hexes are filling up one by one and participation has also been very good, with great games and stories to tell by all.

If this were a close and competitive groups with similar experience levels with the time to see through a massive commitment, I would say, 'yes'. BUT, I really think your proposals could lead to sinking the campaign more then giving it more energy as players who don't want to play underdog to opponents with more experience and maybe with a scary list just leave and fight "non-campaign" "regular" match-ups.

I'm also a little confused with why you think the campaign is "losing its momentum. The number of Fantasy games seem to be on the rise. So if Prim can just get the Map back online, I think things are just about to get more spicy and exciting.
For proposals for exciting things, I would suggest:
1) organizing exciting match-ups and team games. Create some "alliances" and such. Order a pizza.
2) organize extra events outside of Joshin. Wouldn't it be really fun to have a Fantasy-Campaign tournament? That or any other Fantasy event.
3) Buy Prim a new computer.

4) Harass Prim into buying himself a new computer.

2. Good idea again. I tried to book the usual big meeting hall I use for NagoyaHammer, but its full until the end of the year pretty much so I need to start looking further afield.
3. Very generous of you, but my computer is back up and running again. I just need to download the old map, convert it into a format I can edit, update it, convert it back into a format that photobucket recognises and upload it again.
4. See above.
@Jus - Try coming along to Kamimaezu and seeing some of the games being played. WFB is going full throttle.

Re: Grand Campaign EXPANSION
The main point of my posting was not to comment on the fullness of its throttle. Its doing very well, as I mentioned in my first post. The main point of my posting was to suggest some ways to make it a bit more fun is all. If everyone is happy with the way things are then that's fine too.
Would games of FB still continue to be played at the rate it is now even if the grand campaign isn't in effect? I believe it would. As it stands all the grand campaign comes down to is this;
The winner gets a hex for their faction, and a nice little entry in the fluff section.
Now that's totally fine, we've had alot of fun with it. But I'm beginning to feel it stagnating a little. (which is what I meant be losing steam, instead of losing player base - I wasn't very clear about that, so I apologize)
So, what's the point of holding hexes besides recognition? I guess bragging rights are nice, but would it not be better if there was some more incentive to gaining hexes? just my 2 cents.
@ job: hmm I certainly didn't intend for my suggestions to segregate the FB group. It was all in the name of fun and fluff. In fact I don't really see any of my ideas to be particularly game breaking, and even then they are after all only suggestions. I wish we could order pizza, but food isn't allowed at the venue.
1) What are some exciting match-ups you had in mind? some team ups can be brutally and remorselessly broken.
2) A fantasy campaign sounds tip top - at a venue that lets you eat pizza while you play, would be even better
3) He's too undeserving
4) nah...

Maybe a mission of the month would be better, some new special rules to spice up what is going on.

@jus: I didn't mean to dismiss your ideas out of hand, but I think they are too ambitious for our group. On top of which, I think the rules would need veteran players. I'm a little bit of a noob to WHFB.jus wrote:The main point of my posting was not to comment on the fullness of its throttle. Its doing very well, as I mentioned in my first post. Take your rule on hostages as an example. If you had to play the same player to win back your champion, that would mean you would have to play the same opponent twice. Considering most of us don't get too many games in between Joshin days, I think that in itself would put a lot of pressure on the system.
Really, "broken matchups"? I think you just saw Frans have some crafty and wise dice throwing and you got burnt. Anyway, weren't you and Mike arguing by the end you guys were winning? And Frans and I that we were winning? It seemed like a pretty close game.
(I played Mike last month. I shut down his magic entirely. Not one spell was cast. I think the results of the team game were just unlucky rolls combined with the nature of 8th ed. magic.)
I think there are a lot of things we could do to make the campaign even more exciting and fun, but I'm just saying we need to be careful not to burn anybody and kill their enthusiasm.
I like Vos' idea.

Re: Grand Campaign EXPANSION
The original plan was to include some extras like having control of hexes allow you to buy some different magic items etc etc, but as Job pointed out, there is quite a large mix in the experience level of the people playing. If thats what people want to see then we can give it a shot.
I do like this idea and will get something up in time for Joshin.Colonel Voss wrote:Maybe a mission of the month would be better, some new special rules to spice up what is going on.

Re: Grand Campaign EXPANSION
I think a lot of us still don't our armies as well as we should especially for those who have more than one army. The ins and outs of the rules are also probably beyond many of us. It takes a lot of practice and not putting faith into the events of a few games.
