Wood Elves in 8th

Post by kojibear » Mon Oct 11, 2010 1:41 am

Hi Guys :)

From what I have gathered WE have had to really rethink a lot of the common tactics they were using before.

It seems that with the strike back rule and steadfast(I think that is what it is called) it will be very difficult to make units flee. Not only that, but if you choose to flee from a charge yourself the redirection rule could be very nasty. True line of sight and freedom of movement all around also seems to have made the old tactics of the WE seem less effective.

My question is could it be possible to build an effective army of WE for use in the 8th?

Tell me what you all think of the following:

Glade Guard, lots of them, say 40.

With their S4 at close range and shooting in two ranks they could be used well.

Treekin, say 6 or 8.

Basically the WE ogres. They can be in ranks now and with their toughness and attacks I would say would do very well with the strike back rule. Only thing is they are a warmachine target.

Treeman.

Always worth having.

Great Eagles, say 2.

At 50 points each, they would be a necessity to keep the enemies warmachines from destroying the Treekin and Treeman.

From here I am just not sure? Dryads? Wardancers? Waywatchers?

What are your thoughts everyone?

I think it is a good start. Remember to have a mage with life magic nearby to keep the kin and treemen alive.

dryads also work well still. A few skirmish lines and flank attacks to help kill more enemies and try to win combat resolution.
It's easy to die in the swamp. What's hard is to staying dead.

I think Eternal Guard would be a better choice. You'd be spending almost 500 points on a unit which will be assaulted very quickly, thus nullifying it's shooting, which has very poor combat abilities. Sure you'd be able to get maybe 1 or 2 volleys off, but only at 1 target a turn. At 12 points a model Wood Elves are expensive for making hordes with. A block of Eternal Guard have 2 attacks each to the front, gain an extra rank for striking in combat, have a good weapon skill and wear armour. Plus they can be stubborn without needing to be in a horde.
With their high initiative, ward save and lots of attacks Dryads seem like a good core choice as well.

Personally I would take two smallish units of Glade Guard and a larger unit of Eternal Guard or Dryads, though that is just my opinion.
