how do eternal guard work in 8th?

Post by jus » Tue Nov 02, 2010 3:50 am

So these guys are a 12 point special choice for the wood elves army. Just seeing how they compare with other armies special choices. lets see...
Movement 5 : pretty standard for an elf
WS 5: will most likely hit other specials on 4+
BS 4: Irrelevant
S3 : hmm
T3: er...yeah
W1: uh huh
I5: not too bad
A1/2: count as having 2 handed weapons in base to base because of the glaive weapons they have. More fluffy then just saying they have 2 attacks each.
Ld:9 cool
Sv: 5+ regardless of how they are armoured... bah

If we ended there, they"d be pretty ordinary ,if not for their "specialty move" eternal guard fighting style.
The 2nd rank gets a single attack each if they didn't charge.

But here's the question, how special is it now in 8th?
Everyone's grandma and their dog gets supporting attacks from the 2nd rank now in 8th, so do eternal guard get a single attack from the 2nd rank and 3rd rank? no attacks from the 2nd rank?

If everyone can do what they do then it wouldn't really be worth taking them then. A shame really since they look pretty cool.
if its mentioned in the FAQ I must have missed it.

They count as being armed with 2 hand weapons in the front rank and with spears for every other rank.

SO the front rank gets 2 attacks each, the second rank gets 1 attack each (as every unit now does) and the 3rd rank gets 1 attack each since they have spears.

Hope that solves it for you.

I agree with you Jus!

Not really that 'special'. Plus they are only stubborn with a noble in the unit.

I would probably invest more in the glade guard. No move and shoot penalty. S4 at close range. Much cheaper.

It would be nice to have another Wood Elf player to converse and play with BTW ;) ;)

now why would I give up the army that ripped your pansy wrist cutters a new chest vagina?

hmm as much as I would like to start a wood elves army, I think I'd have to be inclined to wait for them to be updated andi'm hoping they do it sooner rather than later. Some units really work with the 8th ed changes , but others are not so hawt. Ah, but since the models and the fluff are so cool, i might just have to up and impulse buy them anyway.

Jus, check this out
http://podhammer.net/2010/10/30/podhamm ... nd-8th-ed/
Podhammer just did a special on Wood Elves in 8th, they cover all the angles pretty much, including eternal guard / glade guard etc. The relevant stuff is abotu 20 minutes in.
The main presenter Jeff, whilst arguably a colossol moron at times, is a tournament gamer and certainly knows his wood elf onions. The presenters are definitely of the opinion that WE are a challenge these days though, and it might be best waiting for a new book.

I reckon Jeffs opinions are highly influenced by the meta game in Eastern Australia... so I figure the Japan gamers might take what Podhammer says with a spoon full of vegimite ... and take a bit of comfort in the fact that only Mike the Pike has a list so full of filthy cheese that there is no way wood elves could be competitive against it...

I played the army... It is rather filthy... one hydra is bad enough but is just nasty... I may not have blown up my wizard if he had not been as filthy as all that....

Reasons to take Eternal Guard:
A 5 wide, 4 deep unit gets 21 attacks at WS5 I5 (with a champion), so they're hitting most things on a 3+ and being hit in return on a 4+
Whilst Glade Guard do get higher S bows at short range, a well placed cavalry charge can mean you never get a chance to use it.
Eternal Guard with a hero in the unit are Stubborn, thats never a bad thing.
They can take a 50 point magic standard as opposed the the Glade Guard 25 point standard.
