Could you disguise the rod coming out of the flea's back to look like a tree or somesuch?

possibly. Itd involve a bit of greenstuffing as the rod is connected to a rock, and trees do not, as a rule, grow out of rocks, but I spose I could do gnarly roots reaching down to the ground or somesuch. Anyway, a tree is not a bad idea. I shall look into the practicalities of it...
