Mix pva glue with green paint to make tyranid blood/slime/ichor and have some staining the blade.

I thought of the blue ink trick, but it's this huge flat piece of plastic, so there's dangers with pooling and such. In the end, I painted the non-sharp part of the blade (I'm sure there's a technical knife term for that) a non-metallic gray. It looks better, and might look better still once the sealer's on. As Prim notes, I'm really looking at the end product of this whole project as nice-enough-looking gaming pieces rather than GD contenders, so I'm pretty pleased with how it's all turning out.

(That said, I re-examined the rest of the squad, and 3 out of 5 of them are holding their bolt pistols in such a way that I'll have to do trimming and cutting of the squad designation decals. Bother.)

His hair I painted brown. Generally, I'm quite happy that space marines are bald.

Edit: I've tried fiddling with PVA glue effects before, too, but whenever I do it always seems to dry darn-near clear unless the mix is basically "paint with some PVA glue in", which doesn't get the blobby effect. Probably just a question of more experimentation, though.

For slime nothing beats Tamiya clear. Seriously - red, green and smoke (grey) are just super useful paints to have. Of you fancy making the knife less flat, just use black paint watered down. Load the brush, then put the side of the brush on some tissue to draw off mosta the paint. Then you can drag the brush (gently) down the blade surface (tip to pommel) and it'll leave a gradiant of black from the tip to the crosspiece. It shouldn't show up the first one u do it, but 4 or 5 coats should give a nice effect (4 or 5 sounds a lot but the paint should b thin enough that by the time you've reached the end of the stroke the start f the stroke should be dry. 4 or 5 coats takes seconds.)

Ps - paint em up like this!

Ha! That's a bit more capital-P Project than I'm really looking at. But it's definitely an awesome diorama. (The black dude, being the only non-military one of the bunch, seems to exist only to say "Hey! I can paint cracked leather!" though, heh.)

Finished up the Scouts. They turned out all right, I reckon:

(Face on the heavy bolter looks flatter than it does in person.)

That's enough for the Marines until I get some Tyranids painted up. I have some Termagants in the pipeline, so they'll be my color test. I'm planning to go for the classic ASC color scheme - red with yellow armor plates and blue markings on the plates. Debating heading down to Ikeda's this weekend and seeing if he has any of Citadel's red foundation paint.

Really enjoying this old school gaming. Just ordered some doors from e bay for advanced heroquest. It was funny when we sat down to play that recently many players struggled with the simplicity of the rules and taking turns asking about flanking plus 1's etc. It was good to have a simple rule set to adapt to. I have some of the old advanced space crusade scouts. Painted as ultramarine at the moment but I might re paint them if we can have a game of this. Definitely up for playing this as battle for alabaster this year.
I like the colourful board as well.
Well done Dave.

See if you can track down the old fluff about Tyranid Warrior life cycles and the colour changes they go through.

They basically get paler and paler and end up white, right? I actually never liked that too much - it's cool enough in principle, but in practice it means you have a bunch of red Warriors and one white one, which always struck me as kind of odd. Especially since the one touch towards modernity I'm doing is consolidating all the Nid colors - even the Genestealers will be red - having a couple white Warriors probably wouldn't fit. I am going full old-school and putting the norn-queen markings on their heads, though.
