This will be my progress log, please share your thoughts.

I will continually update as I take more pictures, the photos are not super quality.

Lord Tor, the Chapter Master

The cloak backpack part is not finished and I need to put some flat varnish on it but you can get the general feeling, the model got a very weathered look because I realized that I am not a very talented painter and I kinda like the roughed up battlefield look.

I am satisfied with the base work and the location of the skull.

Here you can see the chapter symbol (wolf skull with red eye) mounted on the shoulderpad, most brothers in the chapter have this. I will eventually upload the fiction about why and where the symbol comes from.

hmm, grim, gritty and sloshed in mud. Fantastic! Great pose on the chapter master, I can see him pacing across with the battle field in the rain, hammer in hand, without breaking stride. The glowing red eyes is a very nice touch. I'm just trying to place him...could it be....gabriel seth with different arms, a sith lord breather mask marine head, and a skull on the pauldron? Keep going like this and you should be A-OK for ogaki game day.

Also, thats some pretty funky base work? how did you do the chapter master one, is it cork?

very nice work on the bases. The colours on the minis are very gritty and dark, and as an eldar player part of me says "nooooooo, paint em bright, friendly colours!" but then, that part of me is not a space marine player, desho

honestly, though - a big thumbs up from me. If I had to give advice itd be to highlight the edges of their armour to define it a little more, especially the chapter master, but thats nit-picking, really.

job's a good 'un :D

Whilst I generally prefer my marines in bright and vibrant colours, those do look good mate.
How did you attach the models to the bases?
As M_i_J says, maybe a lighter colour on some of the raised corners might be appropriate, but not too much, just a little bit here and there.

Keep it up and I'll be hiring you to paint my marines. :D

I like it... they look realistic... un like Prime and MIJ I like the dirty battle hardend look
just like this...http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery- ... &m=2&w=800
I think if your not playing Eldar you should paint models as dirty and gritty as you can... they are after all fighting in a war... they should look like it... So many times I have felt like I was painting clean for the sake of clean. Do not get me wrong a clean model looks good and will get you the praise of most people but it surly does not look like it has been in a fight. If this is your first go at painting you are well on your way to a good looking army... If you are going to be in Nagoya this Sunday I would like to take the fight to you your newly painted army... with my Tau or perhaps my Daemons.

Yes you are correct in all your questions, the model is made up exactly of that and the base is made from sand and cork pieces.

I will try to do some highlighting on the high edges, I don't want any thick lines though. I'll give it a shot.

The Marine is attached to the hole in the middle with the bar thingy that the model comes mounted on as normal. The base is just made in between his legs so no special work here.

The chapter master base is different, first I clipped off the bar, drilled holes in his legs and pinned them to the cork by drilling a hole in the base. Finally I added some green stuff under the base around the pins and cut the excess off. All with superglue.

I would love to fight them but I can't make it this sunday, I've got a memorial ceremony that I have to attend. See you in Ogaki though ;)

Ok, update. Now finished.

Chapter Master Tor

I added some highlights, added shaved hairstyle, finished backpack which I am satisfied with. I took off all original flesh tearer/blood angels symbols and replaced with my own, like on the backpack I added my own symbol. I redid the skulls with a better wash and highlight so now they look more skullish.

I added some highlights which are hardly visible due to the extra weathering I put on him. Gave him squad and company designation and painted his name on right leg. Also redid the chapter symbol skull on his shoulder.

Looking very nice indeed. This is your first time painting models right?

Keep this up and M_i_J will be asking for your advice.

Apart from a few Ork Boyz that I painted when I was 11, yes, thank you.
Happy to get such compliments. But it wouldn't be much if I didn't get your tutorials on how to do the basics in the first place.
