Here I thought this was a game. If you want a game that is something that is like a real war then you real should stop plaing 40k and go play black powder. GW does some daft things to make money. So does every big company but I guess you still eat at McDonalds. I look at GW as a company that makes models for me to paint. And then they go one step more and write books about the models. And then they take it one more step forward and write a game set for the stories and the modles.

Is it completely daft to have a flying unit in a fight that takes place in an area the size of 3 football pitches? Yes I must say it is.

Is it fun to have a fast flying thing in a game that takes place on a table and in the minds of a few guys that happen to love building and playing with some rather cool toys? I have no problem with that.

Back on topic

Eldar are sure to get a new codex and some really cool models soon enough. Mean wile you can play with any forge world models you like.
Wise, wise words.

I'm with Badruck on this. I mean, if you are going to complain about the role of flyers in a game, please bear in mind that in 40k, you have rifles with a range of 24 metres and artillery weapons with a range of about 48-60 metres. The scale of the game is screwy to say the least, so it is best just to ignore it and have some fun with your friends. :D :D :D

The wiseness of these words has wisened The Spevna.

I think Badruck makes a good point. While flyers are a little gimmicky and surely Eldar should be represented, but there are certainly plenty of players who want an aircraft in their collection. Anyway, I imagine the models will be interesting so worth buying if you just want to model and paint, neh? ;)

As for rules, new editions are part and parcel of 40k. Any veteran can testify to that. While I've known of 2nd Ed. Fanboys I can't say 5th Ed is much loved. Moreover the way GW writes and publishes its hard to stop somewhere and be all that happy. (for example right now DA, CSM and Eldar would be left behind with currently old and unloved codexes. The 2nd / 3rd split might have been the one happy time to stay behind because the rule books and codexes supported to entirely different systems.)

Anyway, sticking to one era is kind of insular. It is hard to expect a new player to come to the area and adopt an old ruleset. The area hardly has enough players as it is and I don't think a giant Schism isn't what is needed to keep the game alive and well.

Everybody bar spev seems to have rather missed the point of my post. Just for those who weren't paying attention, I'll skip past the illustrative example of flyers and reiterate my main point, which was:
The rules are getting to te point where theyre purely a vehicle to sell the new minis. The setting can go hang so far as GW are concerned, it seems.
ps - my sincerest apologies for creating a Schism, especially one deserving of a capital S. *MiJ kowtows and flaps his arms extravagantly, whilst doffing his cap in the humblest manner imaginable*

(Oops- I or the iPhone capitalized it by mistake. _(..)_ ) I just want to avoid anything like forming small circles everywhere. This site and Prim's Nagoyahammer event (wait they both have the same title, hmmm) anyway do so much to keep gaming alive and very much together.

I sympathize with MiJ's feelings. I've kind of passingly thought the same thing, but I think the only way to keep things going, growing and healthy in the community, I think it would be best to just stomach GW's rules, accept what we can't control and be serene, or something like that.

-P.S. MiJ: if you meant that personally, there was nothing personal in my post. If you read it as such, I'm sorry, but it wasn't directed towards you or anyone specifically.

For mediation, I always try standing on my head, but it usually results in me on my futon and sleeping, which is pretty serene with exception to gaming nightmares where I can never roll anything about "5". :( Serenity now. Serenity now.

Me, I get recurring zombie dreams. They're bad, but not as bad as the xenomorph ones. Those wake me up in a cold sweat...

Very true... turning into a zombie is scary, but forgivable and pitiful... but turning into an xenos is an unforgivable heresy in the eyes of the Imperium! If I were you, I'd maybe even sit on those dreams just to play it safe about it pricking up the ears of the Inquisition. :?

most of my dreams (zombie or xeno) are the running-away-from-nasty-monster type dreams. All the zombie ones are terribly post-apocalyptic, and the xeno ones are (predictably) set in giger-esque space ships. That said, watching people running away from aliens/zombies in a movie is a far cry from actually being the one doing the running away. Sometimes a highly detailed imagination aint such a good thing. As for teh dream where I actually was a zombie...best not spoken of in too much detail. That was a weird one, and no mistake... :?
