Basing your troops for FOW (or any other game)

I'm posting this to help address Voss' questions as he works on his FOW models. Hopefully it can become a reference for anyone who is interested in basing their FOW models or basing for another game.
Here are some tutorials on the internet to use.

Also, not mentioned above but what I used for years was modeling clay. It is cheap and you can buy it at Tokyu hands and other craft stores. You can easily layer it by hand or with tools. The drawback is it tends to not adhere by itself. This can lead to it popping off the base later. Also it condenses as it dries and shrinks, although I think this depends on the brand a little.
The spackle is called (update in the morning). You can find it in the hardware departments or home improvement stores. I recommend watering it and using it like the way they recommend in the BF video.
Another option is pumice gel. I have never used it, but I've heard people have gotten very good results with it. I think it is offered by GF9. I'm not entirely sure.
Another point is scour the surface a little before applying anything. You can scratch it with a knife or scour with rough sand paper.
Some people like to paint the models and base together. In which case you can glue them to the surface or press the models into the basing material. I've had success with both of the latter two, but watch out that models doesn't drop out later if you just press it into the basing material. If you decide to paint the models separately, but watch out that you don't get any of the basing material on your nicely painted models.
