Starting Warmahordes

I have been thinking about starting Warmahordes and have a few questions about it.
1. What do you need to play?
2. How many models do you need to start and how much is that in price roughly?
3. To what degree is it possible to convert and use models from other companies in the game?
4. Is there any way of not using named Warcasters and Warlocks in warmahordes, creating your own caster and fluff around him?

I really want to know the answers to these questions as well...

You'll want the main rulebook and some models. The faction books are kind of optional, since all the stats and rules for a given unit are on their card, but it's nice for planning purchases, painting guides, themed army lists and so on.

A single starter box is all you really need - the MSRP for those is 50USD. You'll pretty quickly want to add a unit of infantry or two to that to bring you up to the "standard" game size, and it's always nice to have a selection of warcasters / warlocks, as a simple leader switch will make your army play quite differently.

With friends? Go hog wild, I guess, but it's (purposefully, I'm sure) a very unique IP and nobody I've seen really has models that would fit nicely. Plus you'd have to jury-rig the cards. Edit to add: Plus base size is really important in the rules, so you couldn't (say) just plop down a Terminator and say he's a Warjack or something like that, not without rebasing him anyway.

Nope, aside from reskinning existing casters. But then the fluff is pretty engaging and well-written, and getting in to the ongoing story of Immoren can be a lot of fun.

thanks for the info... as for bace size I looked at the size and most of the models I saw were 50mm 40mm and 30mm so the only base that could potentially work are the termination ones... from what I have seen no one proxy-models much in WarMaHordes.. that has been my biggest turn off. Is it frowned on? if I show up with some Black orks on the correct bace size and call them Trollbloods and if I use my War boss on a 50mm bace as the war beast is everyone going to try and crucify me? I am planing to buy the models in june (with the money I planed to spend on some other gaming system that is now dead to me) but I would like to start playing now.

FYI, Trollbloods infantry are all on 40mm bases - they're big dudes. Their light warbeasts are also on 40's, and the heavies are on 50's.
If you want to use Orks to try the rules out, I don't think anyone would mind too much, especially if you're definitely going to buy in at some point. You'd have to find cards or unit info somewhere, of course.

Thanks for all the answers Dave. I am really sick of buying more models from every company out there right now so I will have to think about it. And games where I can't get connected on a personal level by creating my own fiction etc. never really gets me interested.

Warmahordes, like Malifaux, is a VERY character driven game. Whilst the infantry are fairly generic, the commanders etc are usually named characters and the casters themselves are all very well detailed. In that, it is very different from GW's stuff.
Converting stuff is usually unnecessary. All the models match what they are supposed to do and they are supposed to look like. Unlike 40k, you cant upgrade the models or give them extra wargear. Plus everything is metal or a very solid looking resin making conversions difficult.
Proxying stuff. I've never seen it done, though I guess you could say "I want to test out Warjack B but I only have Warjack A, would it be ok to try this?" and most people would be ok. As with 40k I think the same standard of models should look like what they are most of the time and you shouldnt just proxy everything randomly just because you feel like it. Doing it once or twice to decide if you want to buy that new 'jack is cool though.

hmm yeah, all the primary warcasters/warlocks, named solos are all set in stone, and you must have 1 warcaster/warlock in your battlegroup. Thats your King in this game of chess, if he dies you lose. But whoyou choose to accompany him/her is entirely up to you. You could come up with your own fiction for the cgynar apprentice warcaster unnamed character solo for instance, or some unit attachment leader. I've never thought about playing warmahordes that way. Maybe PP should come up with generic warmagi to use instead of the named casters.

"I'm using Epic Haley,"
"I'm using Karchev the Terrible,"
"I'm using John Doe,"
