Who has a board?

Post by feeltheadrenalin » Sun Apr 10, 2011 8:56 am

Back in the States, I spent a couple hundred bucks making a permanent 8'x4' table to sit in my living room for games of 40k. Now, it's sitting, unassembled, in my parents' attic, waiting for my return to America. It seems to me that the biggest limiting factor for the number of games people on these forums actually play is the lack of space/tables. So, I'm wondering how many of you actually have a suitable table at your place of residence. If there aren't many people, I might consider building some sort of foldable/collapsible table that is easy to store.

Interesting question, that.

Personally, I've made 2 games tables here in Japan. One was made of foam tiles for ease of storage, but I found they got damaged too easily. They are now "resting" in Spevna's school, ready for use whenever folks want to play a game of 40k in Yokkaichi. The second table I made was much more permanent - 6 X 4 ft, made of wood, with fully indented trenches and loverly raised hill sections. Spent ages making it, so i did, and not a small amount of money, too.

Was it worth it?

hmmn, from a personal satisfaction perspective, yes, I think so.
from a usage perspective? no. I think ive played about 4 games on it, ever. (I made it about 2 years ago)

I think the biggest reason that people dont play as much around here as they would like to is simply time, rather than space. Most of us can cobble together a games space, but few of us have the time to game as often as we'd like. Most of us are married, and most have kids. Plus, we all work. Personally, I have the time to game about once a month, if im lucky. Building a games table doesnt change that, unfortunately.

I'd say if you want to build a table, then by all means do so, but do it for your own satisfaction, not in the hope that it will encourage folk to come round and game with you. It may be different in Nagoya, but here in Tsu folks just dont have the time to game more often that at the regular Joshin game at the end of the month. (whcih I havent been to since about october, btw. Thats how much time I dont have...)

Last year I had a 4x4 table for warmahordes that I would use every once in a while in Nagoya. Now that I'm married, I dont have the space or time I once had, as MIJ said. But I would probably make try to make more time to play if someone had a board to play on...

I actually have a 6 by 4 table in my gaming room. I also have about 8 sets of terrain (used for the NagoyaHammer events I run) and about 13 grass mats to use.
I dont have much time to play often, so my table is currently home to about 7 projects in various stages of completion, half a dozen boxes with various contents and random bits that I have yet to find a home for.
I AM in the process of tidying it up as it turns out that my freetime coincides with someone elses for once around the end of the month.
Time, not space is my biggest limit on how many games I can play.

I built a 6x5 table top that sits on my 4x3 game room table. The 6x5 table works very well in most situations but it does not fit in the room very well it was made by a taking 6x3 seet of wood and joinig it to a 6x2 sheet if you have sliding doors in your house you can use them to make table. If I did not have my table I would not have a chance to play much at all.

I have a practical 3.5 x 3.5 table made of wooden racks boxes and floor tiles that has been used for fantasy battle.

Like MIJ said, time is an issue when it comes to organizing a game day. I am free most weekends (for the moment) and would like to game more often. Considering all the work, money and effort that goes into collecting and modeling, only playing once a month seems a bit paltry to be honest.

Apart from time another thing to consider is the trouble of commuting across country to get to a gaming venue, since we all live all over the place, and getting from A to B carrying so much stuff can be a bit much.

All said however, I still would like to do some more gaming. By no means every single week, because that would be insane. but twice a month instead of once would strike a nice balance I think.

Right, who wants a game?

Hmm...interesting. Including travel time, I only work about 37 hours/week, so time itself is not the problem for me. My wife lets me game whenever I want, since she knows I don't get to often. The problem for me is that my free time doesn't coincide well with the standard work week, meaning I'm free when others aren't, and vice versa.

There's got to be some solution to the problem...I find it odd that I could get a game in almost any day I wanted back in my hometown of about 40,000 people, yet in a city of over 2 million, it's very tricky.

I'll think about making my own board, but maybe, for the moment, I'll hold off and see how my new work schedule goes.

BTW MiJ, I'll be working in Tsu on Mondays! If you're ever free and want a game, let me know.

re: mondays - i could be up for that, from time to time, but probably not on a monday when Im working. That said, there are a fair number of public holiday mondays scattered through the year. Do you have one of those jobs where you work public holidays?

I have Ennui's 4X4 board, also a Tatami room which can do WH40K with a little squeezing. Time is more of a problem... BTW Ennui, if you want your board back, that's no problem. I know how much fun we had carrying it the last time!
