Andrew Gloy explains the dice mechanic of Fantasy Roleplay.

Post by ashmie » Wed Feb 22, 2012 12:13 pm

Hi guys, this is an e bay character I've been having fun with recording these past few weeks.
I've used it as a chance to explain the game mechanic for anyone who will be joining the warhammer fantasy rpg in Tsu week after next.

Who is Gloy? Well he is a bit like Alan Partridge meets the world of gaming with a bit of alter-ego thrown in. He is the gamer in us all we hate to love. The guy that is non competitive but hates to lose, the side of us that has just found that all important rule that clearly states that all leather jerkins make him immune to poisons. He's the guy that gave up Larping because it was getting way too 'real' for him to handle.
Purely an outlet for me and my geek side and he's not too dissimilar to the real me so you may not notice much of a change. I'm still fleshing out the character to use in a sketch someday but here he is taking you through the basics of the game using tea making as an example.

Enjoy: http://youtu.be/lKrWBuSox6Q

A universal problem for videos on geek subjects, sadly. See; just about anything by Beasts of War.

Yes, I found that the more I explained the rules of 3rd edition in this clip the easy it was to fall out of character as Gloy. Tried to make some more videos demonstrating the dice mechanic in combat yesterday but it was much easier to use my real self to explain it.
Might upload another one on combat later today but out of character. When I run this I am going to be very careful that the game mechanic doesn't interfere with the roleplay of the game. One criticism was that with new edition you are very aware that you are playing a game and that can get int he way of the roleplay at times.
The dice pool should get easy to read as players roll but at first glance it looks like a tarot deck reading I have to admit. ;) The main thing to remember is hammers are good for passing skill checks and you want more of them than than the cross swords symbols which cancel out the hammers.
Eagles are boons and skulls are banes. These generate the extra special effects for the game. Too many skulls means something unbenefitial has happened and a lot of eagles means something good will be added to the narrative. Again boons and banes can cancel each other out so if you roll an even number of each they have no meaning.

I like the way the dice pool is open to GM and player interpretation. The responsibility is on both to make a good story from what is rolled, rather than the GM having full autonomy. :)

@AndrewGPaul: I beg you pardon, I completely forgot we had a forum member with similar initials and first name to Andrew Gloy. I assure you he is not based on you. You don't have a cousin called Gloy do you?

@MIJ: The game has less characteristics now and Agility now incorporates DEX from 1st editon. Don't worry Gloy knows what he's doing. Or does he? ;) What if he didn't? What then :P :?:

I really wanted to watch this at work, but they block youtube there ...the nincompoops...

Just saw it however. haha this is great, Ash is quasi internet celebrity now, just like prim. Thanks for introducing the 3rd ed dice mechanic, can't wait to try out the game.

If I roll too many crossed swords on challenge dice, and poorly on everything else while making tea, does my head get chopped off? Should make a video of that.

Thanks Jus, glad you liked it. Gloy has finally got his head around the dice mechanic and the combat system and has barely escaped with his sanity in tact but glad he got it off his chest. New clip here explaining the combat system of the game; http://youtu.be/yhVpJh1judo

I've got you down for the Saturday game of whfrp 3rd ed. Hope that's right. :)

They say that understanding the rules and game dynamic of 3rd edition can unlock the dark secrets of the universe whilst simultaneously sending the scholar mad.

Most definitely.

No, nothing like that. It's just that I've yet to see a gamer video on YouTube that features someone with recogniseable public speaking skills.

I hasten to add, I don't include you - I've not watched this video, and I didn't realise it was your alter ego. I was, rather, speaking about the videos by Beasts of War and GW/Forge World.

edit: I just watched it, and apart from the odd "um", it's very well narrated. Could do with a tripod for the camera, though.

Thanks, Gloy is very much cack handed so it's pretty tongue in cheek. Nothing seriously meant. :) Thanks for the feedback. I'll get a tripod. No explanation needed sir, no feathers ruffled, no harm done ;)
