Any MMORPG action going on ?

Post by brownybrown » Sun Nov 18, 2012 12:36 am

Hi Guys
Just wondering if any of you play MMORPGs ? (or is that like the dark side?) Im a complete virgin myself
I missed out on the whole Wow thing, bit cartoony for my tastes i think and probably more importantly at that time it came out i was moving countries, no stable net connection etc.

The Old Republic, SWTOR, Bioware's star wars MMO has gone free to play so I have jumped in there, its ok but im kind of just playing it as a single player rpg as i dont know anybody else playing it and dont really understand how this whole MMO thing works. On my gaming forum (gamers with jobs) people suggested that Lotr online was a better (story, graphics, community) MMO and less intrusive as far as punishing you for being a freeloader.

I just wanted to try it out because I might get in to the new The Elder Scrolls MMO.
Loved/loving Skyrim.

Anyone one around here into MMO RPGs ?

I have been addicted to World of Warcraft twice. All other online RPGs I've tried felt stale and shallow compared to it. However, I simply couldn't justify the time I spent on it. You need to play every day, and schedule all-day raids once a week, to really progress and get the most out of it.

Having tried an MMORPG once for about 6 months, I have little inclination to try one again. As Tenorikuma says, you have to invest a lot of time to get the most out of the game. Whilst it was fun to play and chat online, my miniature gaming takes up any time I might have been able to dedicate to an MMORPG. For me casual games that I can play when the mood takes me are better.

If only I had the time...

Boot camp! Or WoW - being a Blizzard game, they have a Mac client.

@brownybrown: I play TOR pretty actively - a couple friends of mine back in the States and I have a bunch of characters on the Begeren Colony server. It's really a pretty casual-friendly game, and you can play it all the way to the end as a single-player "sequel to Knights of the Old Republic" if you want to. If you feel like rolling up a character on Begeren, drop me a line - I'd be happy to log in with one of my lowbie characters and help you out. I have some characters on LOTRO too, but haven't played in a bit. It is a nice game, though.

Edit: Oh, wait. I actually have created characters on both Asia-Pacific PVE servers as well, if that's where you have characters rolled up.

Thanks Other Dave, Be great to have an exp old hand there. yes i choose the asia -pacific servers, i choose the RP one , Gav Daragon

As a feeloader F2p lad i can only make two characters, so im not sure about changing servers, maybe i can.
So far i have only started as a jedi consular., i have one other character slot free.

I plan to treat it like a single player KOTOR sequel! But i did hear that at Flashpoints? you will need a group and you will get better loot.

My swotor account is brownypoints, probably the same as my origin account i think.

I don't *think* you can friend accounts, so I'll have to check my Gav Daragon character's name and let you know, heh.

Flashpoints do need a group, but they (and the occasional group quest) are entirely skippable. The loot is nice, but the loot you get from quest rewards is really more than enough to keep you alive up to the end of the story and level cap.

Come to Tsu and play real rpg from January we have a new One Ring campaign starting up.
MMORPG's are ok but no way as satisfying as the real thing.
I played Star Trek for about 6 months and found it to be not that different from a single player experience. Mainly because folks didn't really want to communicate all that much. If you like leveling up and endless rpg MMORPG is the way to go. But for communication nothing beats a table and chairs or and a load of people sat around that table of course. :)
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

Apples and oranges, really, isn't it? The RPG in MMORPG is for "computer RPG," I reckon, which means something completely other than a traditional RPG - it's really only called that for historical reasons. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are both very solidly computer RPGs, but I don't think anyone would argue that they're in any way comparable to tabletop, fun as they are. 'Snot as if it's an either-or choice, either, you know? (Also, playing with people you know is totally different than trying to hook up with strangers in an MMO. It really can be good fun.)

At any rate, my Republic-side character on Gav Daragon is Rei'ann, Jedi Knight. Brownybrown, and anybody else who wants to give TOR a shot, feel free to add me to your friend list.

Quite right. I must stop thinking in either or terms. Both are good forms of entertainment and completely different.
