I've never used Devlan Mud. Until GW stops being the shitty skid marks of the gaming world, I will not be using Devlan Mud or any of their other products.

Shortcut? Shortcut to what?
It's not like using washes is anything new. Gamers, especially military ones, have been using washes or dips as a way of mass painting armies for years.
How about glazes? Are they a shortcut too? Drybrushing? They both making painting faster. Do you use either of those techniques?
Drybrushing and washing miniatures is a time efficient way to get a passable looking army on the table.
Layering, shading, and highlighting are more time consuming ways but get better results.
One does not replace the other.
Your idea that using washes is a shortcut is wrong because the term shortcut suggests that it gets you the same results but in less time. This is simply not true.
Base coat and then wash a miniature. Base coat, layer, and highlight a second miniature. Now wash this one. The look significantly different.
The only thing washes offer a shortcut to is a passable looking army. They haven't stunted your growth as a painter, your own laziness has.

I have 3 pots of it in my paint box. I shouldnt need to buy anymore for a good long time.Admiral-Badruck wrote:Just a second guys do not GW models and paints fall in to the spevna stance. Mij prim and Speve can you even buy devlinmud mud???

And yes, I like Skull White and Chaos Black. Bith are very good for mixing with other colours to make them lighter and darker. White is also very good for extreme highlighting. I also use it to put tiny dots on lenses, jewels and lights to create a more natural glass effect.
Again, paints, washes and foundations are just tools to use. One could easily claim that using an airbrush to undercoat your minis was taking a shortcut. So what do you do when you want to shade something brown? Do you mix your own wash? Do you instead take more time to layer the model with several different colours? Do you use the same technique for blue, red, green etc? It seems odd that you only hate 1 colour, when the rest of that range are exactly the same thing.

Re: Do you like GW Paints? Yes? Sorry.....
hmm, I think we have a new stance. Enter the Badruk stance.
I think badruk's beef is with the dependancy (some) people have with devlan mud. The ever pervasive notion that devlan mud makes everything and anything you've painted look good or better has become cemented into the mind of many a hobbyist through internet forum and other sundry medium.
Everything does tend to look better with a light ~ liberal wash of mud. By my word! It's.. IT'S Liquid skill !Is there anything wrong with that? mm not really. Now the truly abysmal paint jobs belched from the bowels of the underworld only look half bad.
There's no denying that the use of devlan mud is prolific. Heck I just added 2 pots to my devlan stock pile. But some people (see references above) depend on the stuff like a junkie depends on his pot. If badruk wants to take a stand...or a stance rather on not, relying on or using the product, thats completely fine I can accept that (and am possibly the only one). I will continue using it (because i am a devlan junkie)
Devlan mud I can understand, but sorry, I can't for the life of me figure out the hate on chaos black
black acrylic paint ...is black acrylic paint (right?). Vellajo has negro black and comes on shinier. I don't like shiny so I'll stick with chaos.

I tend to agree with this, because I think its true. EDIT: although I don't in any way, condone bad poetry. How do I love Devlan Mud? Let me count the ways

How do I love Devlan Mud? Let me count the ways
I love Delan Mud to the depth and breadth and height
My brush can reach, when detail is all but out of sight
For ends of guns and skins grace
I love Devlan Mud to the end of day’s
Most pot needed, be sun or 100W light
I love Devlan Mud freely, as painter strive for right
I love Devlan Mud purely, as we look for praise
I love Devlan Mud with the passion put to use
In my old briefs, and with child’s like faith
I love Devlan Mud with a love I hope to never lose
With my lost saints,—I love Devlan Mud with the breath
Smiles, tears, of all my painting life!—and, if Emperor choose
I shall but love thee better with Vampire painted death

What Justin says is 99% of the reason why I don't like devlinmud the other 1% is that I really do not think it is any better that a wash one could mix up on their own. Glazes, air brushing, and dry brush are fine as are washes fine as long as they are not used as shortcuts to inferior painting. One can and I have taken shortcuts on huge painting projects. But when one wants something to look good they should get better advice than "wash it with devlinmud".
I have yet to use the Vallejo black. The black I use nowadays is Tamaya flat black. It works best out of an air brush.
My skull white always seems to dry out. On the brush too fast. It might just be my pot of paint. But even if I use it off my wet palet it seems to dry out to fast.

Egad! That is bad poetry. Jus, you should be censured for posting something so atrocious!
But, everything else I roundabout agree with. I'm also a Devlan addict. (Step #1)
I have to agree with Prim's point washes of any sort are just a tool in a painters inventory. While it can be respectable to be able to paint with lesser quality tools and paints, I think in the end the finished, painted product is the measure of what we are all talking about. Who cares to some respects how you painted a model (with exception to paying another person), as long as you've shown time, consideration and love into the model.
And if you want to also be judged on the looks go ahead and post it on a rating site.
But, in the end I'm really concerned with seeing painted armies and minis to make the gaming experience enjoyable. However you paint, that is up to you.

Re: Do you like GW Paints? Yes? Sorry.....
Yeesh...
Ok, my opinion...
1) devlan mud is not the same as a self-made wash, for the simple reason that it isn't watered down paint. Dev mud is transparent, and regardless of how much you thin paint, it still dries opaque (albeit in a very fine layer). Chemically, citadel washes and paint are different.
2) it is silly to blame an inanimate object or substance for how some people choose to use it. Take booze, as an example. Some people are alcoholics, but that doesn't mean most folk can't have a drink from time to time. The booze itself is not the problem - the lack of self-control of some people is.
3) re skull white/ chaos black. I can really see very little difference between any white, black or primary colour made by citadel, Vallejo, or P3. They're all acrylic paints formulated for painting minis. The argument of their consistency out of the bottle is moot, as all paints, regardless of manufacturer should be thinned before use. Always. The only gripe I have with GW paints is the bottle design. I fin it very, very hard to believe that the citadel bottles were designed with anything in mind other than "how can we make this paint dry up as quickly as possible?" I'm in the process of transferring every single citadel paint I own into empty Vallejo dropper bottles. I also, btw, put a wee glass bead in the bottle to mix up the paint when I shake it. It helps a lot.
4) yes, the Spevna stance applies to paints, so as I said in a previous post, the whole "new citadel paints line" discussion is pretty much just an exercise in debate, so far as I'm concerned

Try shading with a dark green, dark blue or dark red. Likewise, try adding spacewolf grey or bleached none for highlighting. Looks much more interesting than black shades n white highlights.Bith are very good for mixing with other colours to make them lighter and darker
*edit* then wash the whole thing in devlan mud and call it done
