He's simultaneously shouting/spitting/slavering all at the same time, I think. Much as an ork would when shouting "wwaaaaaaaaaagh!!!!!!" kinda thing.

but would you mark it down for it, though? Bear in mind that it's not a real giant and it's not real spit. The dude had to make it somehow, and I reckon he did the best job humanly possible. Besides, the manky black rotten belly more than makes up for it

I think it takes away from the piece so yes I would mark it down for it. The work either adds to the project or takes away from it. I think it would look better with out it.

Does that mean that if something wasn't perfect it wouldn't get a 10 from you?

That would seem to be the textbook reason to not give something a 10/10 rating, yes. :) I agree with Badruck - the photos without the spittle look better than the finished ones with it.

The pustules on the right arm and breast, and on the belly don't look quite right, either.

I dunno - it depends on how one defines a 10. For me, a 10 is a mini which is measurably better than a 9. I'd give this one a 10. It's clearly a standout piece, and will almost certainly win a daemon or equivalent competition trophy.

But then, how do you define a 9 score? :) to me, if I look at it and think "there's something about that I don't like" then it's not worthy of a perfect score.

That assumes a 10 = perfect. I think a 10 just = "an outstanding piece which is better than its contemporaries for whatever reason" or, more simply, a stand-out mini that I'll remember for a long time as being bloody good. I have a whole favourites gallery full of them on CMoN. By your definition nothing is a 10, as there is always something to improve upon with any mini (or any piece of art). There's a ten point scale took order to give a greater range of ratings than there would be if it was just a 9 point scale, which logically speaking is what you're working from. Think of it as perfect = 11. Sure, there's no 11 rating available, but as its impossible to be perfect anyway, that's not a problem.
