I have no doubt that you play for fun and that you are not deliberately trying to over power your homebrewed dex.
Neither part of that statement is actually true. At least one of the Madmiral's personalities is completely WAAC. :D :D :D

Back on topic....

I have to say that Fandexes at NH just doesn't really fly with me. It's hard enough to keep up with all the different rules out there now (in multiple languages), adding more to the mix just wouldn't help. Especially not in any sort of tourney. The 'fun' second day might be a a chance to actually show-case your work. Kinda like a partcipation game/show case. "Roll up, roll up Do you have the cojones to take on the latest and greatest in Fan dexes?"

It's not really about balance either, it's more about what a player can be reasonably be expected to know and can reasonably expect to face. While I don't have the applicable codices, I have actually heard of the 'the Doom of Malantai', 'Draigo' and 'Wazdakka'. and know they need to be stomped on a.s.a.p. Most folks who play 40K reasonably often, know these kind of things, if not more. That's not really possible with a Fandex.

@The Madmiral: As usual, you are positively frothing at the mouth at even the slightest criticism. And here I was thinking you were a mature gamer. May I suggest a MtP brand 'Chill Pill' (TM) :D :D :D

And yes, I HAVE played against Fan made stuff, way back in the day and, more recently, against some of the Tempus Fugitives stuff. And I have to say I am less than ambivalent. The former was just silly, the latter was OK but only really suited to playing against other armies from that particular campaign.

Actually, the TF stuff is a good example of why Fan made stuff doesn't work outside of a particular campaign/group etc. While the guys over there are all experienced gamers (?) and had put a lot of work into their rules etc IMHO they committed the cardinal error of not giving their creations a weak-point or making an obvious counter to it freely available.

Case in point, I played against 2 (3?) Primarchs from the TF 30K project and I have to say while the idea was nice the execution was lacking. While the Prims were all combat monsters as you would expect, their weakness (not being able to join units like Mefisty or a Daemon prince) was negated by buying Honour Guard which had a special rule which graciously let them be a meat shield (in relic armour with invulnerable saves no less). It would have been cool if I had bothered to read the rules (admittedly my fault) thoroughly and fielded my own Prims but I didn't and I got hosed accordingly. It also didn't help that we screwed up the reserve rules and Leman Russ was allowed to walk into my back field and start punching out Baneblades!

And before someone chimes in, yes I did have a Warhound Titan that he didn't know about and six other supes but..... :D

Who really keeps up with the dexes any way I used sinkrot from the ork dex it is like 4 possibly 5 years old and folks still do not know any thing about it. It is not like I have not been doing it for years. I have played like 5 games v dark eldar and there is still stuff I am finding out mid game. To say that people keep up on the rules at all is a bit daft nobody I play knows the rules better than Prim and even he gets them wrong from time to time. I really think if the fan dex does not have all kinds of fancy rules. Then it can be every bit as easy to play against as any other.

As for some some of the more 'broken' GW creations I faced at NH this year, well, although 'scary' each of them had glaring weaknesses to exploit.

Mephiston - 'ard as nails, but he isn't an IC so no meatshield, nor does he have an invulnerable save. The Tau taught me that guys like him dies to volume of fire quite easily.

The Doom of Malantai - This one was truly scary. However when Carnalfex kindly told me that it's only T$ and tends to die to instant death a lot I promptly went and shot it in the face with a blaster.

Draigo - Again as 'ard as nails. But the 750pts of Grey Knights in his retinue only ran to 5 other models! The DE can field a lot of Dakka for the same amount.

To say that people keep up on the rules at all is a bit daft
It's not so much knowing the rules as knowing a character/unit/vehicle is tricksy/well 'ard/rubbish.

For example, I don't actually know the full rules for most armies but I have a general idea that a 'vanilla' SM Captain is pretty tough and that most of the named SM characters are very tough in C/C and have rules that change the way their army sets up etc. I don't know the rules for Necrons well at all but I at least know they are pretty shooty and have the tricksy rule where they come back from the 'dead'.

Will people that face a fandex at a tourney have even that basic knwoledge? 'tis all I'm saying. In a friendly game, it doesn't matter that much.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I found this quite helpful for me. I have only been to a couple of tournaments and never outside of Nagoya and this was interesting to watch for me. Don't agree with everything, but still, it was helpful for me.

Interesting video.

I do have to say, big gaming events are a lot of work to prepare for, but they're always one of the year's highlights. NagoyaHammer was a blast.
