Warmachine/Hordes Tournaments?

Post by ennui » Wed May 19, 2010 5:47 am

With all these 40k events every few months, I'm starting to feel a little left out over here with my warjacks :P

I know it's mostly the Japanese guys that're playing the WarmaHordes, but I wonder if we couldn't get a decent enough turnout for a tournament one of these days. On a semi-related note: there aren't any Press Gangers over here, are there?

tl:dr
Warmachineのトーナメントやってみたいな~

I dont see why not. If there is demand for it, its certainly possible.
Only downside is I have absolutely no idea how to play. I dont mind setting everything up and helping out, but one of the more veteran players would need to sort out the rules and so forth.

I just posted on the AT43 board that I would consider getting into it if enough people were playing. the same applies to Warmac/hordes, but less so. That is to say, I would take very little encouragement to get into War\hordes. The minis are boss as hell. What kind of size of army is a standard game? (mini count) What kinda outlay would I be looking at?

You can get started with quite fun games with just one of the starter boxes, which are I think $35 US? For the "standard" game size, you'll only really need to add a unit of infantry or so - although, it being a miniatures game, you'll want more for switching-out fun.

Right, you'd probably want to start off with a 15 point list, which means something like a Warcaster, probably 2 warjacks and maybe a couple solos or a small unit. That's probably something like 5 minis on the field. My Retribution of Scyrah lists at 25 points (the average size list, I guess?) has about 15 minis on the board at once.

I would start off by checking out the starter box for the faction you're interested and go from there. The forums at privateer press' site are pretty helpful, too.

I get my stuff here: https://www.malefic.jp/

Fire away with any questions you have that might get you started! The more opponents the merrier ;)

Oh yeah! Battle College is also a great resource for getting a feel how different armies and units play - even if the analysis doesn't make much sense without rules knowledge, you can get a general idea of what the army's like.

hmmn. I'll check out the site a bit. WIth the pound being so weak at the mo, I must say Im tempted. I'm leaning towards Cryx, simply because...well, they look cool.

oooh. Must...resist...low....pound....lovely...Cryx...models....gnghgnghnghn

OK, I have some questions before I damn myself by buying in to a new game.

1) Whats the difference between a regular Warcaster and the epic version. e.g. Iron Lich Asphyxious vs LIch Lord Asphyxious?

2) Visually, it looks like there are factions-within-factions. E.g the kinda piratey looking Cryx, the kinda big-mecha looking cryx, witchy cryx, and the kinda wierdy metal buggy looking cryx. Is this difference just aesthetic, or are people going to gripe at me for being un-fluffy if I took a pirate queen, a big mecha and bug-eyed monster in the same army? I consider fluff to be fairly important, meself, by the way.

3) I dont really like the bonejack models so much as the helljack models. Something tells me I might screw myself if I didnt get any bonejacks. (the rules wot I found online mentioned Arc Nodes, and why theyre great for cryx.) Is this so? Do i really need the wee buck-toothed ratbots?

4) My buddy is putting in an order with Wayland Games real soon, so the faster the answer to this email, the faster I can succumb and spend my hard-earned on a new toy...

Thanks in advance, chaps :)

ps: at the moment Im interested in:

Asphyxious (any version)
Deathwalker (who seems to be somewhat inseperable from Goreshade the Bastard. to be fair, he has a cool name. i could live with buying him, too.
The Witch Coven of Gharlgast and the Egrogore. Mostly the Egrogore. Wierdest mini I ever did see...

Leviathan, Stalker, Helldiver (jacks)
Deathjack. Just for sheer, kickass humungosity.

Necrosurgeons and their lovely stitch thralls
Soulhunters

Skarlock
Machine Wraith

Can you advise on what I should/shouldnt get from these options, and what else Id need for a balanced beginnery force? Just as some indication of my current financial state, there is no way on god's green earth I intend to buy all of the minis listed above. I'm looking to keep things as budgetty as possible, then perhaps build up the list later, if I get into the game more. At the mo, Im thinking of a small mini-force, that I can tinker with and do a nice paint job on, and if anyone else starts playing, maybe actually get into the game properly.

Edit: argh. I'm tempted by the witches too. Oooooh, Dave (me, not him) whyyyyyy are you so indecisive?

incidentally, I just did some math:

DeathJack from Malefic: 6600yen
Deathjack from Wayland Games : 30quid, which at current rates is 3,910 yen

Guess I know where I'll be buying from...
