Re: Dropzone Commander
fair play to Hawk Wargames - sure, it's basically down to the pictures, but damn, dude - dem pictures look gooooood. fantastic lighting and sense of scale. It's almost movie-like in its realism (ok, still look like minis, but if that top pic was an animated shot in a movie, you'd swallow it, right?)

Re: Dropzone Commander
Yeah, the infantry sculpts are in general the weak part of the line. The proportions are off on quite a lot of them - lots of long torsos and stubby little legs. Apparently the vehicles are all CAD-designed, while the infantry are hand-sculpted, and it shows.Dungeon Lord wrote:I quite like the Shaltari except for the troopers. They might be ok because they are so small. That was the main thing. I guess the fact that they look a little leafy or butterfly like may also put some people off. Compared to the other armies, they just don't have the same pull as the bipedals and rotor bladed ships of the PHR.
Edit to add: On the other hand, of course, it looks like you don't really need a whole lot of infantry. The biggest army deals still have only a dozen stands or so even for the (presumably) less-elite armies like Scourge and UCM. Comparing that to less-elite armies at similar scales (Russians in FoW or Orks in Epic) that's really not a lot of infantry at all. I'll look past small numbers of weakly-sculpted infantry for butt-kicking vehicles.

Re: Dropzone Commander
At 10mm the infantry will be fine at tabletop distance, especially with my poor eyesight. So long as the tanks, planes and mechs look good I think the infantry dont matter so much.
I would be careful about judging army composition based on the army deals, they seem to be going for 'one of everything' rather than 'this is what you need to play.' Of course, I dont know the system, so maybe one of everything is good.

Yeah, I expect at that scale it would matter much. As for the army deals, I am sure they are balanced against other army deals, but not the perfect combo.Primarch wrote:At 10mm the infantry will be fine at tabletop distance, especially with my poor eyesight. Re: Dropzone Commander
I'm really liking the way they are packaging this game. Nice starter sets with carrying cases.
Only thing is I think Epic and this game occupy the same slot in my armies and games (Sci-fi at a 6/10mm scale.)
Hmmm...

Re: Dropzone Commander
There's a few notes on army composition in the FAQs on the site - might be worth a read.
As in other games, you need grunts to take and secure objectives. However, it does mention that once secured, they can be garrisoned by armoured units, so the infantry can move off again. Basically, you'll need a few units of infantry, but you'll almost certainly want to have them mounted up in APCs and the game in general is more armour-centric than, say, Epic.

Re: Dropzone Commander
Yeah, I think I'm going to take a good hard look at the rules (and my finances, heh) before I jump in and buy models, not least because I do tend to gravitate towards infantry-heavy forces in my massed battle games. Heck, I may end up liking the Scourge or something. Or not being impressed with the rules, for that matter, although I certainly do like what I've heard so far.

Re: Dropzone Commander
It a actually really reminds me of C&C games. Troop transports, capturing buildings with infantry, air support, the need for heavy tanks balanced by the need for some ack-ack, and so on. That's not a bad thing, tho, as the C&C games were very good. Similarly, I just read all the fluff on the site about the factions - pretty nice stuff, I reckon.

Re: Dropzone Commander
Having looked over the website and read up on the game, it does sound very very good. And Maelstrom's sale is very very tempting.......
(You can tell there is a 'but' coming can't you?)
...BUT....
(told you)
I have a gajillion and 1 other things to be working on right now and Ashmie has just reminded me of something else that I wanted to do. So for the time being, I am going to hold off on DzC. Maybe in the future I will be kicking myself over not taking advantage of the 20% discount, but I really need to stop buying so many models.
