I can see the benefits in doing all of that, and to be fair there's scope for doing it on these bases, I just can't bring myself to paint individual bricks on about 50 separate bases. Also, at this point any right colour would really stand out, and possibly detract from the mini itself. I'll see how it all looks after the metals, grass and flowers are on.

@prim. All I hear is a lot of excuses and a lot of other players are saying the same about those people not coming. And cut them some slack? How about people cut an event organizer some slack when the organizer puts tons of time and energy into making an event for the players but the gamers can't make it out because they are whipped or are just petty? Because the annual "Spend Time with My Wife that I complain about not letting me game enough" day just happens to coincide with the Hammercide event. Scores of Nagoya gamers, after having plenty of time to plan, all decide to spend time with their wives on the SAME day. Planets are in alignment, water spins in the wrong direction and gamers don't want to game. Coincidence, lol, I think not. You can keep your BS excuses. Back home, people support local events because they want to game and hang out with other hobbyists for a good time. They want these events to keep happening. They aren't too petty or lazy or whatever like people are here. Same as back home, a guy I didn't like put on an event. Old school chaos warband event. I went and had a great time. Changed my view on the guy and we got along better. That's what men do. And whatever excuses are thrown back now, I could care less. This horse is kicked dead. You had time to plan and tell people in your life you are busy on this day. your wife or painting toe nails club would have been put aside with no problems. We aren't all new to this. Whatever bs gets you through the day, is what it is. Responding to this just shows I hit it right on the button. Have you heard the saying, "man up or shut up"? Apply now.

Yo, PV. Don't sweat it. You booked the event and put it on and that's good enough. A handful will turn up even if its not the big crowd you hope for. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Or in this case you can herd cats to a gaming event but you can't guarantee they'll turn up.
From my point of view I have no excuse not to join. The reason I wouldn't attend this event is no measure on you or your good intentions. What didn't speak to me was the asking for money up front via paypal and I don't play 40k so often so I couldn't make head nor tail of what you guys were talking about in regards to rules and how to build your list according to loads of spec I couldn't understand. More importantly, 40k winds me up and brings out the violence in my character
That said rather than feel bad about this, put on the event anyway and have a damn good time.
Also to be fair originally this was Prims forum for 40k recently people are finding less time for 40k and trying out lots of different games it's difficult to get everyone together to play one thing.
It's not the end of the world if people are busy, and if it's a polite excuse as you imply then so what?
Book it and they will come I say. Even if you only get 5 its worth doing.
As an events organiser myself I totally get your frustration but its part of the double edged sword I'm afraid.
You can please some people sometimes but you can't please all the people all the time. Organising stuff can be stressful especially with a mental schedule like you've listed. Rather than feel angry or bitter make sure you have a cracking good day, you deserve it.
Keep the event on and have an awesome time I say. Don't worry about the little things. It's just a game remember and for some people it's their main drive for others it's just a hobby.
Keep the faith buddy.

Re: What did you do today.
Sorry, PV, but I kind of agree with Prim on this one. Here are my thoughts:
First, you can only trust people as far as they say. Once you start questioning it your just going to alienate them.
Second, annual wife day is celebrated 365 days a year and at the arbitrary whim of one's spouse.
Third, in the Eikaiwa and English teaching business Sunday is also a working day for many. In addition, Feb. 16th does not fall on a national holiday.
Forth, people back home are just as non-commital and wishy-washy as anywhere. Actually I think people here are overall pretty darn good about upholding commitments, especially considering they sacrifice 30-minutes to several hours of commuting time. Back home, there are people who can't be bothered to walk 5 minutes to a game they arranged priorly. I might also remind you that you might be a cool guy but you aren't a gaming store either.
Fifth, it is pretty well known that gamers are lot of complainers and grumblers. There is no end to the grief they can give a TO. On the other hand, the TO just has to have a tough skin and be super patient. A few gamers will quietly, later, appreciate what he/she's done.
Sixth, your event is in Yokkaichi. It is out of the way. It will take me 2-3 hours from my day and 1500 yen. If you want more people you might think about relocating to places like Nagoya, Osaka or Tokyo. You can't expect everyone to make a long trip down into the hinterlands.
Seventh, 3000 yen is steep.
Eighth, it is really admirable that you actually organized so much of a prize support. It is immense by Japanese tournament standards and even by standards elsewhere, but it might be said NagHam has no prize support and people still come flocking to the event.
Ninth, your tournament is appearing in really unlucky timing. The gamer crowd is getting older in Nagoya and GW games are starting to be less appealing and people are branching out to other systems. Then, there is the fact GW has been running a series of very unpopular policies. That unfortunately affects attendance, most likely.
Tenth, at any event regardless of distance I think you can only expect 10-20% might show up. We have about 30-40 gamers in this area. You might have maximized your numbers.
I think in hindsight you could have papered this tournament more. If it were located more conveniently like in Nagoya and you'd given out the word to player groups in Tokyo, Osaka and elsewhere, you could have pulled in quite a crowd.
Anyway, I appreciate what you are doing. Please be patient with people as there are really outstanding reasons they can't make it.
Anyway again, thanks and Cheers.

I read the above just before I started work today, and spent the last hour or so thinking about how to respond. Luckily, Ashmie, Job and especially ToD did so far more eloquently than I could have managed.Primarch_Vanguard wrote:@prim. Still, I'll give it a shot.
You may want to avoid insulting, browbeating or name calling potential attendees if you hope to run further events, just because you are unhappy that they would choose to spend time with their wife/kids/significant others. Putting on an event IS a lot of work. It can be frustrating and stressful if you put a lot of work into it and no-one shows up. I've had events where I was 20,000 yen down on the day because of room hire fees and prizes. Doing these events is a service to the gaming community but it isn't always going to be a priority for everyone to attend. A lot of people on the forum have wives and kids. We have jobs that require us to work on Sundays. 40K is not the be all and end all of our hobbies. You've just got to roll with it, have a good time and hope that the word of mouth you generate from events you run reaches the people who couldn't make it last time. Make the games accessible in terms of location, costs and rules and hopefully you will get more people coming each time you do it.

@J-R - Just the usual minor drama. Nice mini, or should that be maxi? How tall is that thing anyway? Does it need it's own seat on the train. I am disappointed that you didn't give it a Hello Kitty head though.
