Well, I finally got my first Samurai unit done.
Image
Image
A unit of cavalry, with some Ashigaru in support. The sashimono (back banners) show the Mon (crest) of the Kuroda clan, part of the Tokugawa army at Sekigahara.

As M_i_J said back on the first page, they were quite fiddly minis to paint, but I think they turned out OK.

The infantry with long spears are Wargames Factory minis, the Samurai, Nobori bearer (the huge banner) and the infantry with shorter spears are Perrys. The WF minis are... acceptable, given that they are fairly cheap, but I'd rather have Perrys I think. Sadly the Perrys aren't that cheap, so I will have to make do by mixing them in together.

So now that I know what I'm doing with the painting side of things, it's probably a good idea to sort out all the minor things like rules and so forth. :D
It's worth pointing out that A) I am no expert on how Samurai armies fought and B) This is only a game, not an in depth recreation of the exact manner in which Samurai warfare was conducted.

Army - An army must contain at least 1 clan. The Daimyo of the largest clan is the army Taishou (general) and benefits from the General's Reroll.

Clans
Each Clan must contain at least 4+ units. Clans must be led by a Daimyo who is either the Taishou (general) or Samurai-Daishou (commander). Clans numbering 6 or more units may also include Bugyou (managers) and divide the clan into specialist units under the Bugyou's command.
Yari-Bugyou - 3+ Yari armed units (not including Hatamoto).
Musha-Bugyou - 3+ Cavalry units (not including Hatamoto).
Yumi-Bugyou - 3+ Yumi armed units (not including skirmishers).
Teppo-Bugyou - 3+ Teppo armed units (including attached skirmishers).

Clan Composition
Cavalry - Up to 25%.
Ashigaru - 50%+
Teppo Ashigaru - 25%+
Skirmishers - 1 per 2 infantry units.
Hatamoto - 1 per Daimyo
Artillery - Max 1 piece per army.
Baggage Train - Max 1 piece per clan.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Example army.
Fukushima Masanori led a force of about 6000 at Sekigahara. Using a ratio of about 1:25 for miniatures, this gives a force of around 240 minis on the table, or 12 units of about 20 minis each. More than enough to form a playable army on it's own. (In Hail Caesar, units come in Large, Regular, Small and Tiny sizes. Regular in this case being about 20-24 miniatures. Large is 30-36 minis, Small is 10-12 minis, Tiny is 5-6.)

Fukushima would be the Taishou of the army along with his hatamoto, a small sized unit.
Ashigaru have to be at least 50% of the army so lets say that Fukushima san brings along 3 units of Yari armed troops, 4 units of Teppo armed troops and 2 tiny units of Yumi armed skirmishers.
With 12 units, 25% of that allows Fukushima to field 3 units of cavalry for a hard hitting, fast moving force.
The remainder of the army will be a Samurai unit representing the lower ranked retainers and allies of the Fukushima clan who couldn't afford horses and a baggage train.

This gives an army composition of:
Fukushima Masanori - Taishou - Ld 8
---Small Hatamoto unit.
---Small Baggage train.
Teppo-Bugyou - Ld 7
---Regular Teppo Ashigaru unit.
------------Tiny Yumi Ashigaru unit.
---Regular Teppo Ashigaru unit.
------------Tiny Yumi Ashigaru unit.
---Regular Teppo Ashigaru unit.
---Regular Teppo Ashigaru unit.
Yari-Bugyou - Ld 7
---Regular Yari Samurai unit.
---Regular Yari Ashigaru unit.
---Regular Yari Ashigaru unit.
---Regular Yari Ashigaru unit.
Musha-Bugyou - Ld 7
---Regular Yari Samurai Cavalry unit.
---Regular Yari Samurai Cavalry unit.
---Regular Yari Samurai Cavalry unit.

A unit of Ashigaru armed with long spears for Hail Caesar. They just need their bases doing.

Some more models to add to my army's Hatamoto unit.

A unit of Samurai (with Ashigaru weapon bearers to fill the second rank) that I have just started.
