The most popular tabletop game....?
The most popular tabletop game....?
Waiting outside Joshin last weekend it was quite surprising talking to people. I heard "I haven't played 40K in ages" from a few people. (Of course, it was quickly decided that I was to blame for this). I wonder how many people would have been playing 40K last weekend if NagoyaHammer hadn't been coming up soon.
For myself, I feel like I have played quite a lot of different systems over the past year. Bolt Action, Ronin and Pike and Shotte stand out as the main ones, but I know I have also had a couple of games of Malifaux, Black Powder, Judge Dredd and a quick demo of DZC and Planetfall as well. There were a few games of 40K in that mix, but the all-40K gaming schedule of a few years ago seems to have disappeared.
So, looking back on the gaming year since last NagoyaHammer, what have you been playing?

Re: The most popular tabletop game....?
That is a good question.
I have played mostly 40k and Bolt Action. With Malifaux 2nd edition I feel I need to relearn the game, but I still think it is a neat game. Fantasy, I will be keen to try out whatever GW makes of it.
EDIT: Forgot X-Wing - I am a big fan of that too

JDMG mainly, but a bit of 40K too.
The main reason is that Dredd is so simple and quick in comparison.

Re: The most popular tabletop game....?
I don't game that often, so even if I play 1 game of something in a year that's enough to skew my results. I think I've probably played 40k most, by a whisker, but a very close second is JDMG, basically cos I tend to play at Spev's. I've probably had about 2 days JDMG, 3 days 40k, 1 day x-wing/infinity and 1 day Call of Chthulu in the past year (not counting last Naghammer) so I'm hardly a good example. Last time I played warmachine was against Dlord in Kuwana, but I can't remember if that was this past year or not. I can't remember the last time I played Malifaux at all. It was 1st ed, I know that much...

As for me, it's been Dredd, Dredd, more Dredd - for the same reasons of speed and ease of play, plus I bloody love the background.Spevna wrote:JDMG mainly, but a bit of 40K too.

That's followed by 40k (only 3 games in last 12 months though) in 2nd place. Enjoying what's already a fun game a little more every time I play, too. A few great one offs (Ronin, BP AZW, Epic etc) round it off.

Bolt Action and x-wing. I'm one of those who hasn't played 40k since last NH, although I did enjoy he game on Sunday and am now looking forward to the big dance!

So many games, so little time....

Re: The most popular tabletop game....?
As of this year I've played 6 games of 40k, and 2 games of Bolt Action. Of course they are two games I enjoy. In the past year I've played DZC, FoW, Epic (at ToD's event), and Warhammer. There was also a chance to play X-Wing awhile ago and one chance to play Black Powder and another two games of Pike and Shot.
As for what I like to play, FoW, Epic and BA top my list. I enjoy the visuals of large Warhammer and Black Powder games. Epic is a great system. 40k though takes the cake as a social game as there are so many of us playing. (Although X-Wing is much more relaxing as most of the time you get to sit and drink.) Also in 40k often you can be the most creative with the models.

Nay, I wouldn't have been playing 40K. But it would have been Necromunda or Gorkamorka. The 40K universe is and always will be near and dear to my heart. 40K the game itself is a wonderfully cinematic, descriptive and evocative game. There are lots of random tables to keep you guessing, colorful rules, lots of drama, I love that stuff....in a miniatures skirmish game. 40K has for me just reached critical mass in terms of the number of figures (and separate rulebooks, dataslates, updates, FAQs and errata) that you need to play. And there is no way in hell I am going to shell out the kind of money it would require to stay "competitive". Nagoyahammer will be a blast, but I doubt I can work up the energy to tackle many more 40K games this year.
This year has been Gorkamorka and Dredd for me. Dredd is a lot simpler. Gorkamorka a lot sillier.

I agree.
Happy to play full games of 40K at NagHam, but I'd much rather go skirmish level for my regular gaming. I'm actually feeling like playing some Inquisimunda sometime soon.....

Re: The most popular tabletop game....?
I'm kinda leaning the other way - I feel like I'm not playing as much 40k (or anything, for that matter) as I'd like, and that I want to get in a few more games each year, just enough to keep the rules fresh in my head and maybe even be able to approach a game with some sorta hope of winning. At the moment every time I play 40k I have to dig out the rulebook and reread it just to get the rules halfway straight in my head.
