Call of Cthulhu. Adventure complete.
I will be starting a new game of Call of Cthulu in Tsu on Friday evenings. Probably from 9pm until 1am.
New players welcome. It will be held twice a month. Venue to be announced.
We will have some regular players who can attend most games and I'm hoping the games will run into one another. They will be held as one shots at first so people can come along for just one session if they want to get the feel of what the game is about.
All you need is your brain, a love of investigation, imagination and a sense of the gothic and pulp 20's. Or if you are already a fan of horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft all the better.
Don't worry if you don't know the background or rules it's very quick to pick up and will serve you for years.
And yes the aim of the game for your character to try not to either go insane or die. Sometimes players do both, sometimes neither, sometimes they make it through and live to tell the tale.
Cue wolf howl owwwwwwwww

Re: Call of Cthulhu starts soon
Ah, my favourite game. Wish I could join in as player. I should be running a regular session from next week in Fukui so I'll get my fix from behind the keepers screen at least.
Let me know if you need any material or tips, but I reckon you have a good handle on stuff now.
What are you running?
Cthulhu Fhtagn, etc.

Something about a PULP game seems loads of fun.. if you do not have many players do you think Skype would be an option for some Online gaming???

Re: Call of Cthulhu starts soon
hum. Intriguing.
A few questions:
1) Which Fridays? I work alternate saturdays, so finishing up at 1am on a school day would be Bad (note capital. Yes, that bad...) Unfortunately, its not exactly every second saturday, so I'd have to check my Big Blue Book of schedule.
2) where the heck are you thinking of venue-ing until 1am? Just curious...
3) If by some chance it turns out to be on Fridays that I am available, is there any possibility it could start at 8:00 and finish at 12:00? I only ask cos the missus would gripe if I was out all night twice a month...(yeah, I know, thumbed...)
anyway, I have never in my life RPGd before, but I do have a soft spot for a bit of the ol HP, particularly his usage of "fungous" as an adjective...

The cost of keeping them all fed and clothed alone is horrifying.me_in_japan wrote:Aaiieee Shub-Niggurath, the goat with a thousand young!
There are some folks down in Nagoya who are into the whole Cthulhu thing, so I'll spread the word, but running in the evening like that I dont think they'll be able to make it.

Re: Call of Cthulhu starts soon
I would love to, except for the whole let's-play-in-Tsu thing, unfortunately.

Re: Call of Cthulhu starts soon
Ash and I tested the idea of roleplaying online a little using a combination of Skype and messenger at the same time. There was definite potential there, but some hitches.
Scheduling was a problem, as he can't always get web access. But scheduling is a problem face to face too, obviously.
Dice rolling is much faster for online play if everyone just has their own set, and is honest about what they roll. Or you can use invisiblecastle.com to roll your dice, this really slows down the game however.
We found that although Skype is a very good idea in theory it's not always stable enough, which was a big irritant. I seem to remember that in our test session it dropped out every 5 minutes, probably because of a crappy connection my end. We gave up trying to relaunch it eventually, although some people have better luck with it. We supported this with instant messenger, using the file send function for sending handouts, maps and pictures of characters etc, it worked quite well in that respect.
When we gave up on Skype, we used messenger only, which at least was constant. This wasn't bad actually, but came with its own problems. The downside of rp with instant messages are that players and the GM can write at the same time. There were issues which were irritating on both sides where Ash as player wanted to move on and state that a new event was taking place "I'm leaving the hotel", when I as GM hadn't finished an important description of something in the hotel lobby, for example. It's easy for confusion to occur as to what is taking place unless you reign the players in! Not insurmountable issues though, we should just have agreed to wait for each other, and use special codes to indicate we had finished our message and where waiting for a response. Doh. Simple really. Lesson learned.
The other way to play online is via forum posting. It's incredibly slow, and it can take months to cover the same ground as decent face to face session. But at least you can chip away at a game and know that you are progressing.
I am thinking of setting up some kind of Cthulhu forum game before the end of this year to test it out further.
I think unfortunately that net access for Ash is difficult as he doesn't have it in his home, but yeah, roleplaying online is definitely do-able if you can put up with some of these issues. Do take advantage of the Tsu game if you can though!

Yeah I know Tsu is a bit obscure for gaming but I'm living here so thought I would get something going.
We have two other players who can game from 9pm on a Friday so venue wise it will probably be my house or the other players.
Rpg online is good but can be tricky getting everyone on there at the same time. For me the whole gaming hobby was something to get me away from sitting in front of a screen. The interaction you get from a tabletop rpg like Cthulhu can't be beaten.
Newbies welcome, easy to pick up and as I said we are open to players joining just for one session or two if they can't always make it that's no bother.
